It’s been 24 years since Jim Carrey’s larger-than-life portrayal of The Grinch redefined holiday cinema in Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000), yet the iconic character continues to dominate seasonal conversations.
But will Carrey ever return to Whoville for a sequel? Previous reports from industry insiders, including those at Universal Pictures, suggest there have been discussions for a follow-up to the 2000 classic. While no official announcement has been made, fans continue to speculate about what this sequel could entail. Some believe it could revisit The Grinch’s newfound role in Whoville society, blending his gruff charm with more comedic redemption arcs.

The buzz began when Universal’s Grinchmas event at Islands of Adventure unveiled updates to its character meet-and-greets. The Grinch’s design, modeled almost identically after Carrey’s 2000 prosthetics, leads us to believe the studio has never fully moved on from his interpretation. And this year, The Grinch’s presence in the parks is no less prominent.
The Grinch—complete with prosthetics inspired by Jim Carrey’s iconic 2000 look—is now greeting guests at Honk Honkers, the beloved candy shop in Universal’s Islands of Adventure. For the occasion, the store has undergone a festive transformation to resemble The Grinch’s Mount Crumpit lair, just like in the classic Christmas film.

True to his mischievous nature, The Grinch arrives decked out in his signature Santa Claus outfit, complete with a sleigh and a sack overflowing with “borrowed” presents (no doubt swiped from the unsuspecting Whos of Whoville). Universal Studios photographers are ready to capture every hilarious moment with the green grouch himself.
Of course, the Grinchmas magic doesn’t stop there. Seuss Landing has been completely decked out in Whoville’s whimsical Christmas décor, where visitors can meet and mingle with the Whos—who, thankfully, are a little less unsettling than their movie counterparts. And don’t miss The Grinchmas™ Who-liday Spectacular, a live musical performance retelling the beloved tale, kicking off in Seuss Landing on November 22. It’s the perfect way to experience a touch of holiday cheer with a side of Grinchy mischief.

Going back to the sequel, Universal has neither confirmed nor denied the rumors, but with the success of nostalgic revivals across the industry (Hocus Pocus 2 and The Santa Clauses come to mind), it’s easy to imagine this project gaining momentum. Fans, meanwhile, are eagerly awaiting updates and crossing their fingers for Carrey’s triumphant return.
Whether or not these rumors bear fruit, the mere possibility of a sequel proves one thing: Jim Carrey’s The Grinch remains a cherished holiday figure, ripe for another round of mischief.
