5 Fun Facts About Spaceship Earth You (Probably) Didn’t Know

Spaceship Earth isn’t just the icon of EPCOT; it’s a journey through time, storytelling, and human innovation. But even if you’ve ridden it dozens of times, this classic attraction still holds a few secrets.

From hidden Mickeys to vintage Easter eggs, here are five fun facts about Spaceship Earth that even die-hard Disney fans might not know.

1. Hidden Mickeys Are Everywhere—Starting With the Mural

Before you even board your time-traveling vehicle, Spaceship Earth offers its first Easter egg. Take a closer look at the massive mural near the entrance. Hidden within the number 3 on the satellite is a cleverly placed Hidden Mickey—subtle enough to miss, but unmistakable once you spot it.

And that’s just the beginning. Throughout the attraction, Hidden Mickeys are tucked into sets, props, and even lighting effects, waiting to be discovered by sharp-eyed guests. Think you can find them all?

Several more Hidden Mickeys are tucked inside the ride itself, so keep your eyes peeled!

2. The Living Room Scene Is Always Changing

In the scene set during the dawn of the space age, take a look at the record albums in the living room. Those vinyl sleeves aren’t just set dressing; they’re real albums, and Cast Members occasionally rearrange them, adding a small dose of change and personality to the scene.

3. A Deep Dive into 1969—With One Slight Exception

That same living room scene is meant to represent the Apollo 11 launch in 1969. Everything on the bookshelves and in the room is carefully selected to reflect that specific period, except for one thing: there’s a Beatles album from 1982 that somehow slipped through the timeline.

Also, the moon phase in the following outdoor scene was originally full, but Imagineers changed it to the exact moon phase from July 20, 1969, for historical accuracy. Talk about attention to detail!

4. There’s an Elevator Hidden Behind the Mirrors

Ever noticed those mirrored panels at the entrance of Spaceship Earth? Behind them hides a Cast Member-only elevator that helps with maintenance and accessibility inside the massive sphere. It’s just one of the many hidden spaces and behind-the-scenes elements that keep the attraction running smoothly.

5. Some Animatronics Have Park History

If some of the characters in Spaceship Earth look oddly familiar, you’re not imagining things. Many of the animatronics are recycled from other attractions.

Disney is known for its clever reuse of figures, costumes, and molds, so don’t be surprised if that Roman scholar or medieval monk reminds you of a famous president.

Bonus Tip: Keep Your Eyes Open When It Reopens!

Spaceship Earth will be temporarily closed for routine refurbishment starting August 25, 2025, with plans to reopen later this year. Whether you’ve been on the ride a hundred times or are planning your first trip, the next time you visit, look a little closer—you never know what hidden gems or new surprises you might spot.
