Sony Issues Official ‘Spider-Verse’ Update: Tom Holland Involvement Teased for Upcoming Sequel
Spider-Man fans are starting to feel like the writing is on the wall. A fresh production update tied to the upcoming animated sequel has teased that Holland’s Spider-Man could finally appear alongside Miles Morales in the Spider-Verse franchise.
The timing of all this feels important, too. Sony is ramping up production on the third Spider-Verse film while also preparing for Holland’s next live-action Spider-Man adventure. Between cryptic comments from producers and the franchise’s growing use of live-action elements, fans suddenly have a lot to talk about.

Tom Holland’s Spider-Man Is Still a Huge Deal
Tom Holland has spent nearly a decade building one of the most successful versions of Spider-Man audiences have ever seen. After debuting in Captain America: Civil War (2016), Holland quickly became a central figure in Marvel and Sony’s shared Spider-Man universe.
His solo films — Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019), and Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) — helped turn Peter Parker into one of the MCU’s most important characters. No Way Home especially changed everything by bringing Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield back into the franchise through Multiverse storytelling.
Now, Holland is preparing for another return in Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026), which swings into theaters on July 31, 2026. While details about the movie remain mostly secret, excitement is already building around Peter Parker’s next chapter.
That ongoing popularity is one reason fans continue pushing for Holland to appear in the Spider-Verse movies as well.

The Spider-Verse Franchise Keeps Growing
Sony’s animated Spider-Verse films have become massive hits for both fans and critics. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) completely reshaped expectations for animated superhero movies with its unique style and emotional story centered around Miles Morales.
The sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023), expanded the Multiverse even further and introduced audiences to countless alternate Spider-People.
Now, Sony is working toward the trilogy finale, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse (2027), scheduled to release on June 18, 2027. The film will continue Miles Morales’ battle to return home after the dramatic ending of the previous movie.
The returning cast already includes names like Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, Oscar Isaac, Jason Schwartzman, Daniel Kaluuya, and Nicolas Cage. Even with all those stars attached, though, many fans remain focused on the possibility of Holland joining the lineup.

A New Production Update Sparked Fresh Rumors
The latest wave of speculation began after producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller shared an update on the film’s progress.
During an interview, Lord explained that production is moving forward smoothly while also teasing new additions to the cast. He said:
“We’re in the middle. The story’s wonderful. We have great collaborators. We brought on Alice Brooks to DP the show, and she’s shooting it virtually, which is really exciting. And some great new cast mates. Sorry to be so coy.”
That final comment immediately sent fans into theory mode online.
While Lord never specifically named Holland, many viewers believe Sony could finally be setting up his long-rumored Spider-Verse debut. Holland remains the only major modern live-action Spider-Man actor who has not appeared in the animated franchise.
Live-Action Elements Are Becoming More Important
The Spider-Verse movies have already experimented with blending live-action footage into the animated world. Across the Spider-Verse featured Donald Glover as Aaron Davis/The Prowler in a live-action sequence, while archived footage of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield also appeared in the film.
Now, fans are wondering whether Beyond the Spider-Verse could push that even further.
Reports earlier this year revealed that cinematographer Alice Brooks joined the production to help develop new virtual camera techniques for the movie. That detail alone has sparked major discussion about whether Sony plans to include additional live-action material.
Holland’s Spider-Man would feel like an obvious choice if the studio wants to continue expanding those connections.
Interestingly, Holland has already crossed into Sony’s wider Spider-Man universe once before. In the post-credits scene of Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021), Eddie Brock and Venom briefly saw Peter Parker revealed on television.
Holland has also publicly admitted he wants to join the Spider-Verse movies, once saying he was simply waiting for the call.

Why Fans Are Watching This So Closely
The biggest reason these rumors continue to gain momentum is that the Spider-Verse movies already acknowledge that Holland’s Peter Parker exists within this larger Multiverse.
In Across the Spider-Verse, Oscar Isaac’s Miguel O’Hara referenced the events of No Way Home while joking about “the little nerd back on Earth-199999.”
At first, many fans viewed the line as nothing more than a fun reference. Now, though, it feels possible Sony may have been quietly laying groundwork for a much larger crossover.
Whether Holland appears for a quick cameo or a larger role, fans clearly want to see him finally swing into the Spider-Verse alongside Miles Morales.
