Disney+ to Stream Snow White Remake After Box Office Disappointment

After months of controversy and a lackluster box office performance, Disney’s live-action Snow White will arrive on Disney+ on June 11. The streaming release was officially announced today via Disney’s social media platforms, sparking renewed interest and more divided opinions.

Despite high expectations, the film struggled to find footing in theaters earlier this year, falling critically and commercially short. Now, Disney hopes that Snow White will find a second life on its streaming platform, where viewers may be more willing to give it a chance from home.

But Audiences Aren’t Buying It (Literally or Digitally)

The announcement of the Disney+ release has not been met with much excitement. Many online reactions paint the move as a last-ditch effort to salvage a project that massively underperformed in theaters.

Social media is flooded with skeptical comments. The shift to streaming is widely viewed as a desperate attempt to recoup losses on what has become one of Disney’s most criticized live-action remakes, both creatively and financially.

Hoping for a Happily Ever After on Streaming

While theatrical audiences largely rejected the film, Disney is betting that the Disney+ release might reach a different kind of viewer, those curious enough to stream it without committing to a theater ticket.

With major franchises and originals frequently gaining traction post-release on streaming, there’s cautious optimism that Snow White could still spark conversation, or at least find an audience.

But it won’t be without competition. The 1937 Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the film this remake is based on, is also available on Disney+. Many fans, especially families and animation lovers, might be reminded of the original and choose to revisit that version instead.

Side-by-side on the same platform, the contrast between old and new could be more pronounced than ever.

Will Audiences Give It Another Chance?

Now that Snow White is heading to Disney+, will a broader, more casual streaming audience be willing to give this remake a second chance?

Some viewers who skipped the theatrical release might watch it out of curiosity or convenience, while others may remain hesitant given the widespread criticism.

At the same time, with the original 1937 classic also available to stream, many fans might simply choose to revisit the timeless version they know and love instead.

Ultimately, it will be interesting to see which version viewers gravitate toward and whether this controversial remake can be included in Disney+’s vast library.
