The drama between the Walt Disney Company and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has reached a new peak this week.

A full-on sparring match has broken out over the Reedy Creek Improvement District that Walt Disney World calls home. Earlier this year, DeSantis stripped Disney of the special rights and privileges that it had over that piece of land. The reason for this was possibly due to Disney speaking out against the actions of Gov DeSantis; specifically his “Don’t Say Gay” bill. While this move by DeSantis seemed like he put Disney in its place, we have just found out that Disney truly outsmarted DeSantis and his whole new board. Now, DeSantis is ready to fight back.

DeSantis Furious After Being Outsmarted by Disney

No politician likes feeling outsmarted by a company, especially not Ron DeSantis. For the Florida governor, Disney is a thorn on his side that he cannot get rid of. Taking back power from Disney’s Reedy Creek Improvement District was his way of reminding the company that he was in charge. By passing this change of Disney’s authority, DeSantis was putting the future of that property in the hands of people who he trusts. Unfortunately, those new board members have been unable to make any changes due to a sneaky clause they put in.

This clause has basically put DeSantis’ new board at a complete standstill. DeSantis and his board are furious over this, and they are determined to seek retribution. It was announced today that Gov. DeSantis is ordering the Chief Inspector General to look into Disney’s clause and see if there are any “legal or ethical violations.” This is the first time the Florida governor has addressed this situation directly.

In the letter, he elaborates, saying,

“These collusive and self-dealing arrangements aim to nullify the recently passed legislation, undercut Florida’s legislative process and , and defy the will of Floridians.”

It is clear that Ron DeSantis and his team are not going to back down. The Governor is determined to strip Disney of as much as possible, and he will try to iron out this situation as soon as possible.

The Walt Disney Company, on the other hand, feels that they have done nothing wrong or illegal. Their statement last week said,

“All agreements signed between Disney and the district were appropriate and were discussed and approved in open, noticed public forums in compliance with Florida’s Government in the Sunshine law.”

The public will have to wait and see what will come of the ever-growing conflict between Gov. DeSantis and the Walt Disney Company.
