Pricey New Disney Bakery Struggles to Attract Crowds at BoardWalk
The Cake Bake Shop Bakery by Gwendolyn Rogers officially opened its doors on October 24, marking a highly anticipated addition to Disney’s BoardWalk. This bakery has been known for its luxurious ambiance and elaborate desserts, aiming to elevate the dining experience at the Walt Disney World Resort. The initial excitement had surrounded its grand opening, as many Disney fans engaged in discussions about the unique offerings that The Cake Bake Shop would bring.
However, as the days progressed since the opening, the reception has been mixed. While some visitors were eager to explore the refined cakes and pastries, the initial turnout has fallen short of the lofty expectations set by the fanfare preceding its launch. Observers noted that the excitement did not translate into robust patronage as anticipated.
The menu at The Cake Bake Shop boasts a range of sumptuous options, including specialty cakes, gourmet sandwiches, and decadent afternoon tea experiences. Each item is presented with a delicate touch, befitting the bakery’s high-end image. Despite this, the early days have revealed a gap between allure and actual customer turnout, raising questions about the sustainability of this venture.

High Prices Impact Initial Foot Traffic
One of the critical factors affecting foot traffic at The Cake Bake Shop has been its pricing structure. Guests have expressed concerns regarding the cost of menu items, with specialty cakes and gourmet offerings reaching premium prices that could deter casual visitors. For many potential customers, the allure of indulgent desserts may be overshadowed by budgetary constraints, relegating visits to special occasions rather than frequent stops.
Customer reactions have varied, with some justifying the expense by noting the quality and craftsmanship of the cakes. Still, skepticism remains, especially as patrons weigh their options against other Disney dining venues. The high prices at The Cake Bake Shop stand in stark contrast to more budget-friendly offerings elsewhere in Disney, sparking lively debates among fans and potential customers regarding the value proposition of this bakery.
Moreover, social media has become a platform for public discourse on these matters, with many users weighing in on their willingness—or lack thereof—to pay the premium prices associated with The Cake Bake Shop. The juxtaposition of high-quality offerings and equally high costs suggests that the bakery may need to recalibrate its strategy to appeal to a broader audience.
Location Challenges for BoardWalk Bakery
The location of The Cake Bake Shop on Disney’s BoardWalk adds another layer of complexity to its struggle to attract visitors. BoardWalk, while charming and picturesque, typically experiences less foot traffic than high-traffic hubs like Disney Springs or the theme parks themselves. This dynamic could severely impact the bakery’s visibility and overall success.
Additionally, the presence of competing dining options nearby may further divert potential customers from The Cake Bake Shop. While the bakery aims for a sophisticated allure, the competition from casual dining experiences could dilute its appeal, especially if those alternatives offer similar experiences at lower price points.
It’s lunch time (12pm) and it’s literally empty. No line for the bakery or dining side.

Ultimately, questions surrounding The Cake Bake Shop’s long-term success remain as it establishes its place in Disney’s dining landscape. The combination of high prices, location dynamics, and initial visitor numbers raises important considerations for its operational strategies moving forward. Whether it can adjust to meet the needs and desires of diverse guests remains to be seen. However, with the right approach and a touch of seasonal magic, The Cake Bake Shop might yet find its footing in the competitive world of Disney food offerings.
If Disney had listened in the first place, this would not be happening. We don’t need a cake place on the Boardwalk. With the absence of Big River Grille and ESPN Club there’s no casual place to grab a burger and a beer or just chill out with some casual foods.
Take away casual dining and add a premium price bake shop!!!!! Makes sense to me!!! Since this is the direction Disney is going!!! Premium price everything!
An issue that was brought up in the article was foot traffic, Disney needs to reconsider its rule of not allowing locals to park at the resorts to take in the bars and restaurants at these resorts. If the issue is trying to get out of paying to park at the theme parks then ask if you’re an annual pass holder because they get free parking at the theme parks so there is no loss of revenue if anything you’re spending money at the resorts. It’s sad that Disney is blocking out the locals
When I can buy an entire cake for what they’re charging for one slice, I’m not wasting my money on them. As I’ve heard others say, I’ll just wait until the next thing takes over that space.
