R-Rated Film is Now Topping Disney+ Charts

Back in May 2023, Disney CEO Bob Iger announced that the company would soon be combining its two major streaming platforms — Disney+ and Hulu — into one app. That was nearly a year ago, but on March 27, Disney+ and Hulu subscribers noticed they could now access both services in the Disney+ app. Hulu still has its own app, but the launch went relatively smoothly, and fans have enjoyed being able to access both with just one click.

With Hulu being merged with Disney+, that means that there is a lot more content available on Disney+, not all of it family-friendly. But that is not stopping subscribers from enjoying everything Disney+ and Hulu have to offer. In fact, they love it so much that one R-rated film is shooting to the top of the charts.

Typically, the top-ranking movies and television shows on Disney+ are aimed at children. But in the weeks since the merge, Disney and Searchlight’s Oscar-winning film Poor Things (2023) has been jumping around the top spots. It is currently sitting at number ten on Disney+, and performing even better on Hulu, where it ranks number four.

Since its December 8 premiere, Poor Things has gained a cult-like following, even with its R rating. The film was a sleeper hit at the Oscars, winning a total of four Academy Awards.

Holly Waddington won for Best Costume Design. Shona Heath, Zsuzsa Mihalek, and James Price won for Best Production Design. Nadia Stacey, Mark Coulier, and Josh Weston won for Best Hair and Makeup, and Emma Stone won the Oscar for Best Actress.

Poor Things is based on the 1992 book of the same name, with Emma Stone portraying the lead character, Bella Baxter. Bella is a woman living in Victorian London, but she is not just any woman. She is actually a woman who was brought back to life by the eccentric scientist, Dr. Godwin Baxter. Bella must relearn almost everything, since her brain is not actually her own.

In order to bring Bella back to life, Godwin Baxter gives her the brain of the baby Bella was pregnant with before she killed herself. The film is full of both dark humor and romance, but also a fair bit of blood.
