“I’m gonna steal the Declaration of Independence.”

What a line, right?

If you are a Disney fan, then you probably know that the line quoted above is from the 2004 film National Treasure. The movie starred Nicolas Cage as Benjamin Franklin Gates, a treasure hunter determined to find the Knights Templar’s greatest treasure and bring back his family’s good name. Unfortunately, Ben is not the only one after the treasure and, in order to protect it from nefarious groups, he must steal the Declaration of Independence.

National Treasure was a hit and three years later, Disney released National Treasure: Book of Secrets, which was also a huge hit. It seemed that a third movie was all but guaranteed. In 2022, National Treasure producer Jerry Bruckheimer even confirmed that a script for the third film had been sent to Nicolas Cage.

Disney seemed to almost cement a third film with the release of the Disney+ series, National Treasure: Edge of History in late 2022/early 2023. Unfortunately, the series was a flop and Disney canceled the show after just one season.

And now, National Treasure fans, we have an update from Nicolas Cage. Sadly, it’s not what we were hoping to hear.

Cage spoke to Screen Rant and said that National Treasure 3 was NOT happening.

Here we go! See, you’re the one that brings these things up and they go out and they eclipse everything else. No, there is no National Treasure 3. If you want to find treasure, don’t look at Disney, okay? It’s not there.

While it is disappointing to hear, we can’t be completely surprised that Cage and Disney are not teaming up for a third film in the franchise. In 2022, Cage gave an in-depth interview with¬†GQ and said that Disney turned its back on him after he had several flops with the studio. Cage starred in Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance (2011), Season of the Witch (2011), and¬†The Sorcerer’s Apprentice (2010), and none of them were hits.

Cage said that he had been excited about National Treasure 3, but said that Disney canceled the project and decided to stop reaching out to him. However, he did say that he enjoyed making independent movies more than he enjoyed making films like National Treasure.

National Treasure¬†and National Treasure 2 also starred Diane Kruger as Abigail Chase, Justin Bartha as Riley Poole, Harvey Keitel as FBI agent Sadusky, and Jon Voight as Ben’s father, Patrick Gates.¬†National Treasure: Book of Secrets also saw the addition of Helen Mirren as Ben’s mother, Emily Appleton.
