New ‘James Bond’ Era Begins, as Amazon MGM Reportedly Narrows Search to Three Actors

Replacing James Bond has never been a straightforward task, but Amazon MGM Studios faces a particularly important decision as it prepares to introduce a new 007 following Daniel Craig’s five-film tenure.

The studio has spent months searching for an actor capable of taking the franchise in a new direction, and the latest reports suggest that the process is approaching a decisive moment.

The creative team already has a major name attached. Denis Villeneuve, known for directing Dune (2021) and Dune: Part Two (2024), will direct the next Bond film, with Steven Knight, creator of Peaky Blinders, writing the screenplay. Amy Pascal and David Heyman are producing.

Craig’s final appearance in No Time to Die (2021) ended with Bond sacrificing himself, bringing his version of the character’s story to a close. Since then, speculation has surrounded almost every conceivable successor, from established Hollywood names to younger British performers who could potentially lead the franchise for years to come.

Now, reports indicate that the casting process has reached its final screen-test stage. Callum Turner (Eternity) and Jack Lowden (Slow Horses) are among the actors reportedly being considered, alongside Josh O’Connor (Disclosure Day). The auditions are expected to take place in London, although none of this has been confirmed by Amazon MGM itself.

For Amazon MGM, the decision goes beyond finding someone who looks convincing in a tuxedo. The next actor will be responsible for establishing a new identity for a character who has been portrayed by six actors in film, with audiences bringing decades of expectations to the role.

Producer Amy Pascal has acknowledged the challenge. Speaking to Deadline in August, she said that an announcement by the end of 2026 was a reasonable possibility, while emphasizing that the team was taking its time.

“We are being really, really methodical,” she explained. She also said the next interpretation of Bond needed to be “something really different that is stirring and exciting and different.”

Despite the growing speculation, the project remains untitled and has no officially announced release date. Amazon MGM has also declined to comment on the latest casting reports, reiterating that it will share further information when the time is right.
