On April 21, we learned that Searchlight Pictures — which is owned by Disney — was putting production on one of its major new films called Being Mortal on pause due to complaints filed against one of the stars of the film. At first, the identity of the person against which the complaint was filed was kept under wraps, but it was quickly leaked that it was Disney star, Bill Murray.
According to a report from Variety, Searchlight sent a letter to the cast and crew announcing that they were pausing production on the film as they investigated the allegations. When asked, Searchlight declined to comment on the investigation. They also declined to say whether they were looking into recasting Murray’s role.
More information on the allegations of inappropriate behavior that were made is now coming to light. In a new report from Page Six, Murray has been accused of being “touchy” with some of the female cast and crew on his new film. Per the reporting from Page Six:
A source told Page Six, “He was very hands-on touchy, not in any personal areas, but put an arm around a woman, touched her hair, pulled her ponytail — but always in a comedic way.
“It is a fine line and everybody loves Bill, but while his conduct is not illegal, some women felt uncomfortable and he crossed a line.”
A separate source says that Murray, who is apparently single, “Loves women and loves to flirt, he enjoys poetry and romance, he’s always flirting, but it is always couched in comedy. It isn’t clear if he crossed a line.”
These allegations are not the first ones made against Murray regarding his on-set behavior. Lucy Liu starred alongside Murray in the 2000 film, Charlie’s Angels. In the past year, she has spoken out about Murray’s poor treatment of her, saying that he “hurled” terrible insults at her when a scene was rewritten in the film without her permission.
Ben Dreyfuss — son of iconic star Richard Dreyfuss — said that Disney had to bring security in on the movie What About Bob due to Murray assaulting one woman and throwing an ashtray at his father. Richard Dreyfuss, in the past, confirmed that Murray screamed in his face, but never publicly confirmed that an ashtray was thrown at him.
Bill Murray had a meltdown during what about bob because he wanted an extra day off and Laura said no and ripped off her glasses off her face and my dad complained about his behavior and Bill Murray threw an ashtray at him.
Everyone walked off the production and flew back to LA and it only resumed after Disney hired some bodyguards to physically separate my dad and Bill Murray in between takes
