Disappointing ‘Star Wars’ Sequel Continues With New Story
Star Wars has long relied on tie-in media such as novels, comic books, and animated shows to deepen its storytelling. Those mediums have often expanded elements only briefly explored onscreen, sometimes reshaping how fans view certain characters or eras.
Now, that approach continues with a new follow-up to Star Wars Outlaws, the 2024 open-world video game from Ubisoft that introduced players to outlaw Kay Vess.
Star Wars Outlaws: What Happened?
Set between the films The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983) — making it both a sequel and a prequel — the game focuses on the faraway galaxy’s criminal underworld and allows players to travel across multiple planets while taking on missions involving various factions.
Although Outlaws generated a lot of buzz ahead of release, its reception was mixed, to say the least. Critics and players highlighted technical problems and mechanical issues, and Ubisoft later revealed that the title failed to reach its expected sales targets.

Newer Stories Have Kept It Alive
Nevertheless, the game received post-launch expansions, including Wild Card and A Pirate’s Fortune, which added new storylines and characters.
Now, the world established in Outlaws continues in publishing with Star Wars Outlaws: Low Red Moon, a prequel novel written by Mike Chen. But rather than centering on Kay and Nix, the story focuses on ND-5 and Jaylen Vrax, supporting characters from the game.

Star Wars Outlaws 2 Is Unlikely
Penguin Random House describes the book as following the duo as they “embark on their descent into the galaxy’s underworld in search of answers and opportunity.”
Low Red Moon explores parts of the Outlaws setting only touched upon in the game. While it functions as a prequel, it also broadens the world-building introduced in Ubisoft’s title.
The future of the Outlaws storyline in gaming, however, remains uncertain, with no sequel announced by the developer. However, Lucasfilm has frequently continued storylines through novels and comics when individual Star Wars projects conclude or pause. While it’s unlikely we’ll see another game in this series, more tie-in media is almost inevitable.
Star Wars Outlaws: Low Red Moon was published on February 3 and is available now.
