Marvel Shuts Down Legacy Debate, Replaces Chadwick Boseman for ‘Black Panther 3’
Few Marvel characters have carried a legacy quite like Black Panther.
Following Chadwick Boseman’s unexpected death in August 2020, Marvel Studios chose not to recast his T’Challa. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022) instead addressed the character’s death and passed the Black Panther mantle to Shuri.
For years, it appeared Marvel planned to leave T’Challa’s place in the MCU untouched.
Now, the studio has officially chosen a new actor to carry the Black Panther name into Wakanda’s future.
Marvel Reveals Its New Black Panther
David Jonsson will officially become the MCU’s next Black Panther.
Marvel announced at its Hall H presentation during San Diego Comic-Con that Jonsson has joined Black Panther 3 as the adult son of T’Challa.
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige brought Ryan Coogler onto the stage for the announcement. Letitia Wright and Winston Duke joined them as Marvel revealed its plans for the franchise.
Coogler, who directed and co-wrote the first two Black Panther movies, will return to direct the third installment.
Rather than recasting the T’Challa played by Boseman, Marvel will continue the character’s legacy through his son. It’s a direction that traces directly back to the ending of the previous movie.
A Major Reveal Comes With a Release Date
Marvel didn’t stop with its new casting announcement.
The studio confirmed that Black Panther 3 will arrive in theaters on December 15, 2028.
Coogler introduced Jonsson as Marvel’s new Black Panther during the presentation. Jonsson became visibly emotional as the Hall H crowd welcomed him.
“I want to say thank you so much,” Jonsson said, thanking Coogler and Feige before describing his opportunity to join the franchise as a privilege and blessing.
He remained careful about revealing what comes next.
“I don’t want to say too much because I want to let the screen do the talking,” Jonsson said.
Marvel hasn’t shared plot details, but Jonsson’s character already has an important connection to the franchise.
Marvel Builds on Its Previous T’Challa Reveal
The closing moments of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022) introduced T’Challa and Nakia’s young son.
Nakia revealed that the boy had been raised away from the pressures surrounding Wakanda’s throne. Although he went by Toussaint, his Wakandan name was T’Challa.
Jonsson will portray the adult version of that character.
Audiences may recognize Jonsson from Alien: Romulus (2024), where he played Andy, a malfunctioning synthetic who traveled with a group of young colonists. He also appeared as Pete McVries in Stephen King’s adaptation of The Long Walk (2025).
Black Panther 3 will now put Jonsson at the center of one of Marvel’s biggest franchises.
Denzel Washington is also expected to appear. Washington previously said Coogler wrote a role specifically for him, although Marvel hasn’t revealed his character.
Additional casting and story details remain unknown.
The MCU Has Plenty Coming Before 2028
Marvel still has several major projects scheduled before audiences return to Wakanda.
Avengers: Doomsday (2026) will bring together another large collection of MCU characters before Avengers: Secret Wars (2027) continues the larger story.
Marvel also has VisionQuest on its television slate, continuing Vision’s story within the MCU.
Meanwhile, a Ghost Rider film will bring the supernatural character back to the big screen.
Those projects leave plenty of time for the MCU to evolve before Black Panther 3 arrives.
Wakanda Moves Into Its Next Generation
Boseman’s connection to Black Panther remains a major part of the franchise.
Marvel honored that legacy by refusing to directly recast his version of T’Challa in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022). Now, the studio has found a way to continue the name without casting another actor in Boseman’s exact role.
Jonsson will instead play T’Challa’s son and carry the Black Panther mantle into a new generation.
When Black Panther 3 reaches theaters on December 15, 2028, Wakanda will finally have its next protector.
