Disney’s newly-released trailer for the upcoming live-action remake of The Little Mermaid still only gives fans teasers but no real insight yet into the story of the new film.

The newest live-action remake to come down the line from Walt Disney Studios is The Little Mermaid, which will debut in theaters on May 26. The film has been in production for years, with some of the production processes beginning before the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, which ultimately slowed those processes.

The film stars Halle Bailey as Ariel, Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric, Daveed Diggs as Sebastian, Awkwafina as Scuttle the Seagull, Javier Bardem as King Triton, and Melissa McCarthy as the evil sea witch Ursula.

The new trailer for the film has been out now for several days, and no matter how many times we watch it, the short montage of clips from the upcoming film simply doesn’t tell us enough about the story behind the new remake. As with all of Disney’s live-action remakes, the film will be loosely based on earlier versions of the story, including the 1989 Disney film all about Ariel and Prince Eric, the young mermaid’s inability to follow the rules, and her craving for human legs, as well as the original story by Hans Christian Anderson.

But like other live-action remakes produced by Disney, the film will no doubt deviate from earlier versions of the story as well. And we were really hoping the newest trailer would give us more insight into those deviations. Guess we’ll just have to see the film in the theater when it debuts in May!

It is a beautiful trailer for the film, nonetheless, and we’re thrilled that the new film is finally (almost) here. You can see the trailer in its entirety below:
