‘Jurassic World Rebirth’ Reveals Mutant T-Rex and Flying Raptors
As Jurassic World Rebirth (2025) prepares for its July 2 release, excitement for the film is palpable. However, it appears that anticipation for the latest entry in the iconic franchise isn’t quite reaching the fever-pitch levels seen with its predecessors.
The seventh film in the series, directed by Gareth Edwards (2014’s Godzilla) and starring Scarlett Johansson (Avengers: Endgame), is set to bring fans back to a familiar landscape: a remote jungle island filled with genetically engineered creatures. But there’s a big twist.
Rebirth follows a top-secret mission to retrieve vital DNA from three giant dinosaurs on an abandoned InGen island, where dangerous new “mutant dinosaurs” await.
While this sounds like the kind of action-packed premise fans expect from a modern-day summer blockbuster, the fact that it’s a plot for a Jurassic movie, of all things, despite previous films having taken plenty of creative liberties, has left many fans concerned.
After all, the introduction of the “Distortus Rex” and “Mutadons” — hybrid, mutated versions of the franchise’s classic dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus Rex and Velociraptor, which were revealed in a recent Empire exclusive — is a truly significant departure from the more traditional creatures seen in earlier films.

Fans are also expressing concerns over the film’s lack of originality when it comes to bringing something new to the table. Unlike Jurassic World (2015), which rebranded the franchise and built a solid buzz through a smart marketing campaign, Rebirth feels less innovative. Its lazy focus on nostalgia, alongside its derivative subtitle and familiar jungle-island expedition plot, could be seen as a step backward for the Jurassic brand.
Despite these challenges, though, Jurassic continues to be a box-office powerhouse, having grossed over $6 billion globally with its previous six films alone. But Rebirth faces tough competition in the crowded summer movie season, with Superman (2025) soaring into theaters just over one week later.
Rebirth‘s underwhelming trailer, coupled with fan fatigue and skepticism about the plot, leaves many questioning whether the film will meet expectations.
With Jurassic World Rebirth promising to usher in “a new Jurassic era,” it remains to be seen whether it will redefine the franchise or falter in the shadow of its predecessors.
Its success may hinge on its ability to balance the old with the new — a feat that every film so far has managed to accomplish, even if the last two entries, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018) and Jurassic World Dominion (2022), received negative reviews.
When Is Jurassic World Rebirth Out?
