‘Jurassic World 5’ Official Premise Will Leave Fans Torn Once Again

The Jurassic World franchise has never been accused of playing it safe. If anything, the film series’ defining trait over the past decade has been its ability to divide fans while still delivering box office dominance.

That pattern continued last year with Jurassic World Rebirth (2025), directed by Gareth Edwards and starring Scarlett Johansson. The seventh film in the long-running series once again reignited debate over whether this once-solid franchise has truly run its course.

Despite grossing $869.1 million worldwide, Rebirth landed with a familiar split reaction. Positioned as a partial reset, the film steps away from the global dinosaur chaos introduced in Jurassic World Dominion (2022) and instead returns to a more contained jungle survival format, despite Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018) going to lengths to finally move the franchise away from that all-too familiar premise.

But the criticism surrounding Rebirth largely centred on its decision to erase the established global dinosaur storyline. After Dominion ended with dinosaurs integrated into human civilisation, Rebirth pivots back toward isolation and survival on yet another remote island by explaining that dinosaurs have started to die out around the world as the “planet’s ecology no longer supports them.”

The introduction of a third InGen island and new mutated dinosaurs that were never mentioned in the films before also reinforced the sense that the series is now simply rehashing old ideas rather than evolving them.

The new characters—played by Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Rupert Friend, Mahershala Ali, Luna Blaise, David Iacono, Audrina Miranda, Philippine Velge, Bechir Sylvain, and Ed Skrein—also came under fire for lacking any real depth.

Still, despite that divided response, reports suggest that a follow-up project, tentatively referred to as Jurassic World 5, is in talks, with rumors pointing toward a possible July, 2028 release window. Gareth Edwards and Scarlett Johansson are said to be in early negotiations to return, though nothing has been confirmed by Universal Pictures as yet.

If the pattern holds, though, the next installment will undoubtedly once again lean into escalation—whether it’s more mutant dinosaurs, human hybrids, global threats, or new prehistoric creatures entirely, like Ice Age beasts.
