Sometimes, moments at Disney parks become teaching moments for all of us. That’s exactly what’s been happening on TikTok recently after a video surfaced showing a guest bringing his dog into Journey of Water, Inspired by Moana at EPCOT in a way that raised eyebrows among both service dog handlers and Disney fans.
In the video, the guest claimed to have a service dog and encouraged others to bring their pets along inside the interactive water attraction. The video, stitched and responded to by @thesaltysheps—a creator known for advocating responsible service dog behavior—has sparked some thoughtful conversations around the internet. Many pointed out that this was not only against Disney policy but could also have unintended safety risks.
@thesaltysheps #stitch with @AmericanStandardK9 “Service animals are permitted in the Moana section at Epcot, specifically the Journey of Water attraction, with some guidelines. Service animals must be leashed and under the owner’s control at all times. Cast Members cannot assist with service animals, and guests may be asked to leave if the animal misbehaves. Service animals are not allowed in water features or within 4 feet of the water.” from my experience, the rules are on a giant sign before you even enter the attraction. Blatantly ignoring the rules just for views is disgusting, and blocking people who call you out for it is even worse and just proves you know what you’re doing is wrong. #servicedoglife #servicedogsoftiktok #servicedogs #dogtrainer #disney #disneyworld #moana #dogtrainingethics #dogsoftiktok #servicedoghandler #dogtrainingcommunity ♬ original sound – thesaltysheps
For those unfamiliar, Journey of Water is a beautiful, interactive experience where guests explore the natural cycle of water through hands-on exhibits, splash zones, and fountains. It’s designed for humans to interact with the environment while learning about conservation and the beauty of nature. It’s important to note that the water in these features is recirculated and filtered, much like other attractions at Disney World.
But here’s where things get tricky. Disney’s rules allow service animals inside the attraction area on the walkways, but the animals are not permitted to enter or play in the water. This isn’t to be restrictive or unfair—it’s about protecting both guests and animals. The water, although filtered, isn’t designed to accommodate animals. Allowing dogs into the water could introduce bacteria or contaminants, even from the most well-groomed pup.
For families enjoying the attraction, especially little ones playing in the splash zones, there’s an expectation that the water is maintained to the highest safety standards. When pets, even service animals, are introduced into that water system, it can disrupt the balance, potentially creating health concerns.
This isn’t just about safety, though. It’s also about respect—for other guests, for cast members, and for the hardworking service dog community. Misrepresenting pets as service animals creates confusion and can damage the credibility of legitimate service dog teams who have gone through rigorous training and rely on their dogs to assist them in public spaces.
Videos like this can send mixed messages. While the guest might have thought it was harmless fun, encouraging others to do the same can create more challenges for Disney cast members and make it harder for guests with actual service dogs to navigate the parks without skepticism.
It’s a good reminder for all of us: when visiting Disney World or any public space, following the posted rules isn’t about being strict or limiting fun—it’s about keeping these spaces magical, safe, and enjoyable for everyone.
At the end of the day, EPCOT’s Journey of Water is a celebration of our planet’s most precious resource. Let’s do our part to honor that by treating the space—and each other—with the respect they deserve.
