Johnny Depp and Penélope Cruz made waves when they shared the screen in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011), a film that stirred up mixed feelings among fans of the beloved Disney franchise.
While their chemistry as Captain Jack Sparrow and Angelica brought fresh energy to the series, many felt the movie lacked the heart and depth of earlier installments.
For some, it was a fun diversion; for others, it was a sign that the Pirates magic was fading.
Fast-forward to today, and Depp and Cruz are reuniting for Day Drinker, an upcoming thriller from Lionsgate and director Marc Webb (The Amazing Spider-Man).
The film centers on a cruise ship bartender (Depp) who crosses paths with a mysterious day drinker (Cruz), leading both characters into a web of crime and unexpected connections. Fans of their past collaborations, including Blow (2001) and Murder on the Orient Express (2017), are excited to see the duo together again in a project that promises twists and suspense.
This reunion comes at a pivotal time for Depp, who is making a steady return to major Hollywood productions after years of legal battles. Cruz, meanwhile, has remained in demand, recently appearing in Ferrari (2023). Their combined star power brings high expectations for Day Drinker.
For Pirates of the Caribbean fans, this announcement reignites the ever-present question: could Depp’s return to the role of Jack Sparrow be next? His portrayal of the eccentric pirate remains one of Disney’s most iconic characters, and fans have been vocal about their desire to see him back in the franchise. With Cruz once again by his side in Day Drinker, some are hopeful that the studio might reconsider its earlier stance.
While there’s no confirmation of a Pirates revival yet, Day Drinker feels like a nostalgic nod to their past work. Whether this film sparks new life into the franchise or simply stands as another chapter in their on-screen partnership, Disney fans will be watching closely—and maybe holding onto a little hope for more adventures on the high seas.
I am delighted to hear things have moved into the direction where they all started. Sometimes I feel Disney POTC’ and Johnny Depp are synonymous. I would have watched it even without Johnny but I will love it with him in it I know the writers are going to thrill us all over again. Who might be directing?
I CAN’T WAIT!! I was Hoping the Powers that be would Finally wake up & get “Our” next Johnny Depp & Penelope Cruz movies up & on the Big Screen!! YAYYYYYYY❤️💕💋❣️💋❣️
Johnny is the only person for this character, it’s his personality, non other is like it, he can’t be replaced, One Of Kind! Disney did smart
I’m really looking forward to this one. I’ve been anticipating a comeback for Johnny and here it is. I believe that he and Penelope give us a dejavu of POTC. It would be so nice for another Collab with them in POTC, but I stand with Johnny ( SUWJ ) on his stance with POTC. Because, I believe that they treated him unfairly and took a rash decision about him and didn’t wait to find out the story before they kicked him to the curb. So I stand with him, and will always support him in whatever that he decides to do.
I believe that if Johnny decides to go back to POTC, it will be for the many fans who’ve supported him through thick and thin. Who walked with him through his court battle and who congratulated him in his win. Who held him in prayer and most importantly, those of us WHO NEVER GAVE UP ON HIM. We believed ALWAYS that he was the victim, and it was too bad that the POTC franchise didn’t see it that way. So I will always support him and watch his movies.
