Johnny Depp has long been a figure of attention and controversy, not only due to his film roles but also because of his complex personal life. Recently, a prank involving the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise star and another celebrity’s assistant resurfaced, drawing significant public scrutiny.
During a prank gone awry, Depp and journalist Hunter S. Thompson fired shotgun blanks at actor Don Johnson’s assistant. Johnson recounted the incident during a recent interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live.
Previous Controversies About Johnny Depp’s Behavior
Depp has faced various controversies in recent years, notably stemming from high-profile legal battles and allegations from his ex-wife, Amber Heard. The tumultuous nature of their relationship captured public fascination, with Heard accusing Depp of domestic abuse, a charge that led to significant media coverage. A 2020 libel case further complicated his reputation; Depp lost a lawsuit against a newspaper that labeled him a “wife beater.”
Despite this, Depp emerged victorious in a 2022 defamation suit against Heard in Virginia. The jury found in the Modi (2024) director’s favor, concluding that her allegations had adversely impacted his career. This legal victory, while restoring some of his public standing, has left lingering questions regarding the complexities of the narrative surrounding both actors.
Depp has also been accused of “out of control” behavior on film sets. In 2022, he settled a $100,000 lawsuit from a crew member who accused Depp of punching him in the ribs.
Attempted Prank on Don Johnson
Actor Don Johnson shared his memory of the shotgun blank prank during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live. Johnson, who was neighbors with the late Hunter S. Thompson, revealed that the incident was part of a series of pranks orchestrated by Depp and Thompson.
Johnson explained that he had sent his assistant to Thompson’s home to collect marijuana, which led to Depp and Thompson ambushing the young man with shotguns loaded with blanks, dramatically shouting, “Die, motherf***er!” as the assistant exited the vehicle.
“My assistant, god bless him, he peed his pants right there,” Johnson told Kimmel. “… Wouldn’t you?”
