It’s been just over one month since Disney and Pixar released the highly anticipated sequel, Inside Out 2. The movie saw the return of the emotions audiences knew and loved from the 2016 film — Joy (Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust (Liza Lapira), and Fear (Tony Hale).

In the first film, Riley is a young girl dealing with a move to San Francisco from Minnesota, and those five emotions are enough to get her through. However, in Inside Out 2, Riley is going through puberty, and a slew of new emotions take up residence inside her head. Joy and the gang now have to deal with Anxiety (Maya Hawke), Envy (Ayo Edebiri), Ennui (Adèle Exarchopoulos), and Embarrassment (Paul Walter Hauser).

Before its release, experts estimated that the movie would earn around $100 million at the box office in its opening weekend. Well, the movie shattered those expectations, making almost nearly $300.

Since then, Inside Out 2 has continued to break records. First, it grossed $100 million in its second weekend at the box office, the first animated film ever to do so. Next up, there was Pixar’s own personal record. Just a few weeks after its premiere, Inside Out 2 became Pixar’s most successful animated film, surpassing Incredibles 2 (2018).

And now, we have an exciting new announcement to make.

As of July 24, 2024, Inside Out 2 passed Disney’s uber-successful Frozen II (2019), making the Amy Poehler-led film the most successful animated movie ever!

Per TheWrap:

After six weeks in theaters, Disney/Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” has passed $600 million in domestic grosses and $1.46 billion at the global box office, enough to be declared the highest grossing animated film in box office history before inflation adjustment.

Yesterday, the Pixar sequel grossed $9.2 million to pass the $1.45 billion global run of Disney Animation’s “Frozen II” in 2019, which the studio recognizes as the record holder as opposed to its photorealistic CGI remake of “The Lion King,” which grossed $1.65 billion the same year.

Last summer, the world was obsessed with “Barbenheimer — blockbuster movies Barbie and Oppenheimer, which were released on the same day. Both films were successful, but Barbie soundly defeated Oppenheimer in terms of box office success. Well, Inside Out 2 has surpassed Barbie’s success and will soon pass 2022’s biggest summer movie, Top Gun: Maverick.

With the movie still seeing box office success, it is expected that the movie will soon surpass Incredibles 2 to become the highest-grossing film in North American history.

The success of Inside Out 2 came at the perfect time for Pixar, which had been struggling in recent years. The iconic animation studio hadn’t had a box office hit since before the pandemic. Onward (2020) was pulled from theaters just a couple of weeks after its release because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Its next three films, Soul (2020), Luca (2021), and Turning Red (2022), did not even have theatrical releases. Then, there was Lightyear (2022), which was a massive failure, and several Pixar executives were fired because of it. Elemental (2023) received rave reviews, but only saw success after it was released on Disney+.

Inside Out 2 is not the only film expected to be a box-office success for Disney this year. On November 27, Disney will release another highly anticipated sequel, Moana 2. The Polynesian princess sequel was expected to be the Mouse House’s movie of the year, so it will be exciting to see how it performs compared to Inside Out 2.
