The movie, based on the classic video game characters, is a collaboration between Universal, Illumination, and Nintendo. The evil Bowser is intent on taking over the world, and Mario has got to stop him! There’s just one problem, his right-hand man Luigi has been kidnapped! Mario teams up with Princess Peach, and the duo fights to save the Mushroom Kingdom! The film features an all-star cast including Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, Seth Rogen, and Fred Armisen.

Right away, The Super Mario Bros. Movie became Illumination’s most successful film ever. It surpassed the Despicable Me franchise, Sing, and even The Grinch within weeks. It wasn’t content to just be Illumination’s highest earner, though. It had its sights set much higher.

As the film closed in on Frozen, we could practically hear Disney executives asking, “What the heck happened?” For more than a decade, Disney has enjoyed the title of highest-grossing animation of all time. First with Frozen and then its sequel Frozen II. Now Mario has blown right past Frozen and has its eyes set on the top prize.

Frozen blew everyone away when it raked in $1.28 billion at the box office. At the time, it was unheard of that an animated film could turn a profit that large. Then along came Frozen II. The return to Arendelle grossed a staggering $1.45 billion. The Super Mario Bros. Movie is sitting squarely in between at $1.3 billion.

Time will tell if Frozen II can be unseated, but as The Super Mario Bros. Movie is winding down its theatrical run, it looks like Disney may still wear the crown…for now. This should be a wake-up call to Disney that unless they change something, they won’t hold the title for long. For now, all eyes are on The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Will it unseat Frozen II? “Only Ahtohallan knows….”
