Frontierland Area Blocked off at Magic Kingdom, Guests Denied Entry
Another piece of the Frontierland that Magic Kingdom Park guests have known for decades disappeared behind plywood walls on June 2.
A Familiar Stretch of Frontierland Is Gone

Visitors to Magic Kingdom Park on June 2 discovered that a section of the boardwalk running between Liberty Square and Frontierland had been closed off by plywood construction walls. The barriers are the latest expansion of the construction footprint surrounding Piston Peak National Park, the Cars (2006)-inspired land currently taking shape in the area formerly occupied by the Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island.
@Blog_Mickey was among the first to document the closure on X (formerly known as Twitter):
The first portion of the Frontierland boardwalk has closed to guests. New pavement in the area also removes the officially unofficial “Little Mississippi”

WDWNT also shared this photo of guests navigating the newly compressed Frontierland walkway:
The construction walls reveal a freshly repaved red walkway and are adorned with wooden fence detailing and rolling planters that blend into the frontier surroundings. Behind them, the small water feature that guests had affectionately nicknamed “Little Mississippi” for years has been covered over. Current activity behind the walls appears focused on constructing a retaining wall to define the boundaries of Piston Peak National Park as it continues to take shape.
The Bigger Picture in Frontierland

The boardwalk closure is the latest in a string of eliminations that have steadily reshaped Frontierland over the past year. The transformation began in earnest when Walt Disney World Resort announced Piston Peak National Park at D23 2024 — a Cars-inspired expansion inspired by America’s national park system. The Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island, and the Liberty Square Riverboat all closed permanently to make way for the new land.
When Piston Peak National Park eventually opens, it will bring two new attractions to the Magic Kingdom that won’t match anything in Cars Land at Disney California Adventure Park: a rally race thrill ride and a family-friendly attraction introducing Ranger J. Autobahn Woodlore, a character created specifically for the expansion.

Walt Disney World Resort has not announced an opening date for Piston Peak National Park.
