EPCOT Landmark Abandoned and Shuttered in Unpopular Move

Disney’s BoardWalk is known for its scenic charm, eclectic dining, and lively entertainment. However, an unexpected closure has left many Disney fans puzzled. If you’ve wandered past Jellyrolls, you may have noticed an empty building that was once home to Big River Grille and Brewing Works.

This popular dining spot served signature brews, burgers, and steaks, and was well-loved by BoardWalk visitors. But in January 2024, the restaurant closed its doors for good after a sudden announcement. Guests were given only a few days’ notice before the closure on January 22, raising questions about what led to the abrupt shutdown.

An Empty Space Without a Plan?

Unlike previous BoardWalk closures, Disney did not announce a replacement for the space. When the ESPN Club closed in 2022, it was quickly revealed that The Cake Bake Shop would be taking its place. However, no such plans have been shared regarding Big River Grille’s location. Instead, a temporary food truck appeared outside the restaurant for a brief period after the closure, but it wasn’t a long-term solution.

Despite the uncertainty, Disney has welcomed other third-party businesses to the BoardWalk, such as Blue Ribbon Corn Dogs and The Cake Bake Shop—proving that third-party operations aren’t the issue. This only adds to the mystery of why Big River Grille had to close without a new venture stepping in.

What’s Next for This Prime Spot?

Disney fans are left speculating. Will the space reopen as another restaurant or perhaps something entirely new? The location’s proximity to Jellyrolls and the BoardWalk’s vibrant atmosphere makes it a prime spot for an exciting attraction. Yet, as of now, Disney remains silent on its future.

The BoardWalk has always been a beloved part of Disney World, blending nostalgia with fresh, new experiences. Hopefully, this abandoned spot will soon see new life and become a highlight for visitors once more.

Until then, guests can enjoy the variety of dining and entertainment already available—but many will keep an eye out for announcements about this once-bustling restaurant space.
