Disneyland is stirring excitement among its visitors with the introduction of a revamped scene featuring the infamous bride, Constance Hatchaway, in its Haunted Mansion attraction. This new depiction aims to enhance the overall experience for guests while amplifying the storytelling aspect that Disney is renowned for.
As guests glide through the dark ride in their “doom buggies,” they will encounter the bride holding a candelabra, casting a warm glow that highlights her flowing, red hair. This change signifies a shift from her previous portrayal and is reflective of Disney’s commitment to evolving the narrative while staying true to its roots.
To elevate the Haunted Mansion’s atmosphere, Disney has implemented advanced projection technology in the new bride scene. This allows for a more immersive experience, as guests can see Constance seemingly floating before them with an enhanced visual effect. The use of modern techniques not only revitalizes the classic ride but also ensures that it meets contemporary standards of guest engagement. Disney Imagineer Kim Irvine notes that this upgrade was sparked by the original figure falling behind in terms of maintenance and technological innovation, making it the perfect opportunity for an update.

As part of the updates to the Haunted Mansion, Disney officials have recognized the need for sensitivity regarding certain elements of the attraction’s past.
Disney Imagineer Kim Irvine shared more insight into the changes. “We thought, what if we change the story back a little bit to the original story that the Imagineers had about a lost bride in the attic mourning the loss of her husbands. It was a sad thing. It was a story about lost love.”
Irvine also expressed Disney’s concern about the rather violent nature of the bride, which layed into the new changes.
“The bride that used to be in there was an axe murderer, and in this day and age we have to be really careful about the sensitivities of people,” Irvine said. “We were celebrating someone chopping off her husband’s heads, and it was a weird story. I know the fans — some will like it and some will say, ‘Oh, you changed something again.’ That’s our job. That’s what we’re here for.”
As discussions continue regarding future enhancements to the Haunted Mansion, one of the most debated topics revolves around the hanging corpse seen during the ride’s pre-show. This controversial element has drawn mixed reactions, with some guests believing it fits the haunted theme, while others feel out of place in a modern amusement park. The Imagineers are reportedly still evaluating this detail, considering both the structural challenges and audience feedback.
There is also speculation about whether similar changes might be applied to the iconic Haunted Mansion located at Walt Disney World. As Disneyland leads the way with its new updates, many Walt Disney World fans are eagerly awaiting announcements regarding adjustments to their version of the attraction. Given recent updates, such as the introduction of the Hatbox Ghost, it stands to reason that enhancements could resonate throughout both parks in the future.
