Disney’s Figment Movie Dream Shattered, Plans Reportedly Scrapped

Figment, the lovable purple dragon, has been a Disney icon since his debut in 1983. Created by Imagineer Tony Baxter, Figment was introduced as the whimsical star of EPCOT’s Journey Into Imagination ride, where he delighted guests with his mischievous antics and colorful personality.

Over the years, Figment has become a symbol of imagination and creativity, beloved by generations of Disney fans. Despite his popularity, the character has long been relegated to the theme park attractions, leaving fans to wonder when Figment might finally star in his own film.

Now, after years of speculation and excitement, it seemed that Disney was finally ready to bring the purple dragon to the big screen, leading many to believe that Figment’s time had finally arrived.

Fans of Disney’s beloved purple dragon, Figment, were excited when reports surfaced in 2022 that a feature-length film was in the works. Seth Rogen’s production company, Point Grey Pictures, was attached to produce the movie, and news that Disney was finally bringing Figment to the big screen had fans eagerly anticipating the release.

However, a recent statement from Disney CEO Bob Iger during the 2025 Annual Shareholders Meeting has cast doubt on the future of the project.

While the details have not been officially confirmed, it appears that the Figment movie has been shelved—or possibly canceled altogether. During a Q&A session, Iger was asked about the potential for a Figment movie or series, and instead of reaffirming the feature-length film’s development, he joked about how frequently he is asked about the purple dragon.

Iger then shifted focus to discussing short-form content or potentially a Figment series, which he said could be a better fit for the character.

His comments about shifting to short-form content or a series seem to suggest that the feature-length Figment film is no longer a priority for Disney. For many, this will be disappointing, especially after the years of anticipation leading up to the announcement of the film’s production.

Despite the cancellation of the film, fans of the whimsical character can still find Figment in EPCOT, where the character remains a central figure in the park’s identity. Additionally, Disney’s decision to explore short-form content or a series could breathe new life into the franchise, albeit in a different format than fans originally envisioned.

For now, the fate of the Figment movie remains unclear. While Iger did not confirm a full cancellation, the fact that the film has not been mentioned since 2022 — coupled with his remarks at the 2025 meeting — makes it appear that the project is in limbo. This leaves many wondering if Figment will ever make it to the big screen in the way fans had hoped.
