Mother Criticized for Dressing One-Year-Old in Inappropriate Backless Outfit at Disney

A mother, who is also a frequent visitor of the Disney parks with her family, has sparked fury online after posting video footage of her then-one-year-old daughter in inappropriate attire.

Disney resorts across the world welcome guests to take part and elevate their own magic through fashion. While actual costumes are prohibited (aside from during ticketed events such as Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party), guests can Disneybound and accessorize to their heart’s content.

For children, the rules regarding character costumes are much laxer. It is not hard to go a few steps at any Disney park without seeing children adorned in princess attire or even dressed as Mickey or Minnie Mouse themselves.

Dress code has been a hot topic in recent months as more guests become increasingly brazen with their outfit choices. Disney has a policy that bans certain items, such as garments that include gross and vulgar language and clothing that exposes too much skin.

That rule did not seem to apply to a one-year-old child, though, whose mother dressed her in a backless outfit inspired by Minnie Mouse.

While the child wore this outfit back in 2021 during a vacation celebrating her first birthday, the clip resurfaced in May 2024 after her mother, Christina Wait, posted a video celebrating 100+ trips to the Disney parks.

Known as @TheDisneyBarbie on Instagram, the creator routinely posts photos and videos of her and her family to 325,000 followers. On the post in question, Wait garnered over 28,000 likes, but the comments were turned off.

And it’s clear why.

According to reports on the matter, Wait received a barrage of criticism about how she dressed her child at Disneyland. For context, the video features the text: “Bringing my baby to Disneyland for the first time for her first birthday in 2021; 3 years later and over 100+ days spent at Disney.”

One popular comment (via The Sun) read, “Girl dress your child properly tf,” while another person wrote, ”Nice work blasting your daughter on [Instagram] for all the creepers. Great mum.”

More users condemned the outfit choice with one comment reading: ”First of all, why aren’t you putting an undershirt on your child, and second of all, a child should not be wearing anything like that.”

Welcome to your life my love

While comments may have been deleted on this post, Wait has received backlash on other videos for dressing her daughter in clothing like crop tops.

Certain social media users criticized an Instagram post from September 2023 that includes the above outfit as its thumbnail photo, with one questioning why crop tops were suitable for a two-year-old toddler.

That said, the majority of comments on this specific montage were celebrating the child’s outfits and asking where they could get similar items for their own children.

As for the wider landscape of Disney’s dress code, many reports over the last few years have revealed that guidelines have been ignored.

At Disney World, one guest saw multiple visitors walking around Fantasyland at the Magic Kingdom in shirts with curse words on them. In addition, vulgar imagery, adults in costumes, and too much-exposed skin have also been an issue.

In fact, for the latter, a viral trend circulated throughout 2021 and 2022 that saw guests try to gain entry to a Disney park, usually Walt Disney World Resort, in revealing clothing only to get free merchandise to cover up.

When he’s not thinking about the Magic Kingdom, Thomas is usually reading a book, becoming desperately obsessed with fictional characters, or baking something delicious (his favorite is chocolate cake -- to bake and to eat). He's a dreamer and grew up on Mulan saving the world, Jim Hawkins soaring through the stars, and Padmé Amidala fighting a Nexu. At the Parks, he loves to ride Everest, stroll down Main Street with an overstuffed pin lanyard around his neck, and eat as many Mickey-shaped ice creams as possible.
