In August, Disney announced that the popular Annual Pass Program would finally be returning to Disneyland Resort — only now it would be called the Magic Key Pass Program. Disney had ended the original Annual Pass Program in January 2021 while the Parks were closed due to the pandemic and promised a new, reimagined program.
When it launched eight months later, Disneyland’s Magic Key Program was met with a lot of fanfare and Guests waiting for over an hour to purchase the new pass. With the popularity of Magic Keys, reservations for Passholders began to quickly fill up, and now Guests are unable to make reservations for both Disneyland and Disney California Adventure unless they try to do it weeks in advance. This has become incredibly frustrating for Guests who purchased the top-tier Dream Key — which promised no blackout dates and up to six reservation holds in exchange for a whopping $1,400.
Disney has always reserved the right to stop selling any or all Magic Keys (and other Annual Passes) whenever it wants to, and it looks like they have now exercised that option. Guests visiting the Disneyland website will now see that they do not have the option to purchase the Dream Key. However, the Believe and Enchant Key are still available for purchase. The Imagine Key also remains available, but it is important to remember that the Imagine Key can only be purchased by Southern California residents.
Due to the extreme popularity of passes and the limited reservations available, Disneyland states the following on its website:
We recommend that you check to see if your desired theme park reservations are currently available before purchasing your Magic Key pass. Please note that reservation availability may change after you view the access calendar, and dates that are available at this time may be unavailable in the future. It is recommended that you make your reservations early as availability can change until the park reservation selection is finalized. Park reservations are limited, subject to availability, may not be available on select holidays or popular dates, and are not guaranteed for any specific date or park.
In the past, not all Annual Passes were available at Disneyland Resort all the time. The old Southern California Resident Pass was only available at select times, and sometimes the only people who could purchase that Pass were those who were renewing.
While the Dream Key is currently unavailable, Disney may always decide to reintroduce the Key in the future. Disney is constantly evaluating its Pass sales and, if they feel it would be beneficial for both the company and Guests, there is a chance the Dream Key could come back.
What do you think of Disney pausing sales of the Dream Magic Key?
