Disney World Just Made One of Hollywood Studios’ Best New Experiences Permanent

Disney’s Hollywood Studios is getting a major addition on September 14, but Disney just confirmed that guests won’t have to lose one popular experience to make room for it.

The Walt Disney Studios Lot has featured free-roaming characters since the courtyard opened May 26.

Unlike a normal meet-and-greet, these characters haven’t simply stood in one location while guests waited in line.

They’ve played games. They’ve interacted with guests around the lawn. They’ve created moments that can feel completely different from one visit to another.

And they’re staying.

Disney has confirmed that roaming characters will continue appearing in the courtyard once The Magic of Disney Animation opens.

A Temporary Addition Becomes Something More

When Disney introduced the roaming characters, their long-term future wasn’t clear.

That question became even bigger because The Magic of Disney Animation would eventually give several of those characters dedicated indoor locations.

Rapunzel, Mulan, Chip ‘n’ Dale, Donald and Daisy, Goofy, and Stitch are all part of the six character meet-and-greet areas inside Off the Page.

Once those experiences opened, Disney seemingly wouldn’t need the same characters outside.

That part is still true. The current courtyard lineup will change as characters transition indoors.

But Disney isn’t removing the roaming concept.

A different group of characters will take over the courtyard, although Disney hasn’t announced that lineup yet.

Hollywood Studios Keeps Some Unpredictability

That’s what makes this news particularly exciting.

Character experiences have traditionally been an important part of Walt Disney World, but roaming characters create something a standard meet-and-greet can’t completely reproduce.

Guests might walk into the area without any intention of meeting a character and suddenly find themselves watching Donald play a game on the lawn.

Rapunzel has braided guests’ hair, while Mulan has stopped to practice warrior poses.

Those moments don’t require an elaborate attraction. Their appeal comes from how unexpected they can be.

It’s a simple idea that feels much closer to the spontaneous character encounters longtime Disney fans remember.

More Characters Are Coming

The Magic of Disney Animation officially opens September 14 as the final piece of the Walt Disney Studios Lot transformation.

The new area includes Off the Page, Olaf Draws, the Drawn to Wonderland playground, and the Once Upon A Studio Theater.

Disney has also indicated that guests could encounter roaming characters inside the building, meaning the concept won’t necessarily remain limited to the courtyard.

For Hollywood Studios, that’s a significant win.

The park gets its new permanent indoor character experiences without sacrificing one of the most entertaining additions Disney has introduced outside.

We still need to learn which characters will take over the courtyard after September 14.

For now, though, Disney has answered the biggest question.

One of Hollywood Studios’ best new character experiences is here to stay.

Andrew Boardwine

A frequent visitor of Walt Disney World Resort and Universal Orlando Resort, Andrew will likely be found freefalling on Twilight Zone Tower of Terror or enjoying Pirates of the Caribbean. Over at Universal, he'll be taking in the thrills of the Jurassic World Velocicoaster and Revenge of the Mummy
