Disney has released a first look inside The Magic of Disney Animation, the new collection of experiences opening September 14, 2026, at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. The preview shows a colorful celebration of Disney’s animation legacy, from Mulan inside a Story-department setting to a Mary Blair-inspired Alice in Wonderland playground. But one innocent drawing class also marks a notable change in how Disney presents human artistry to park guests: the teacher is no longer physically in the room.
The attraction occupies the former Star Wars Launch Bay space, now styled after the Walt Disney Animation Studios campus in Burbank. Disney’s First Look Turns the Animation Process Into the Attraction
Disney’s September 9 Walt Disney World preview takes guests through the finished interior ahead of opening day. The building is inspired by the Roy E. Disney Animation Building, while the concept draws from Once Upon a Studio, the 2023 short in which Disney characters come to life after employees leave.
This isn’t a conventional ride. Disney has assembled character encounters, a drawing class, an indoor play area, a theater, and galleries under one roof. It returns the area’s identity toward the art and process of animation after years of Star Wars Launch Bay and a 2025 redevelopment.

Off the Page puts Mulan and friends inside the pipeline
At Off the Page!, character meet-and-greets are staged around animation-production departments. Disney says guests may encounter Mulan in Story, Rapunzel in Layout, Chip ‘n’ Dale in Hand-Drawn Animation, Donald and Daisy in Computer Animation, Goofy in Lighting, and Stitch in Effects.
Mulan’s backdrop includes an oversized storyboard panel, while Rapunzel’s setting evokes the multiplane-camera process with layered backgrounds and painted cells. It’s a way to make the meet-and-greet explain how animated films are built instead of simply placing characters against franchise scenery.
The approach also connects to Hollywood Studios’ original identity. Inside the Magic chronicled the demolition of one of the former animation area’s remaining opening-day landmarks during the redevelopment.
Olaf Draws! Trades a Live Instructor for Recorded Disney Artists
Olaf Draws! is where the new experience becomes more complicated. Disney says an Audio-Animatronics Olaf hosts while Disney Animation artists guide guests through recorded tips, techniques, and stories. Announced instructors include artists and filmmakers such as Eric Goldberg, Fawn Veerasunthorn, and Byron Howard, depending on the character being drawn.
That keeps real artists and their expertise at the center of the lesson. What it does not provide is a live artist leading the room.
That distinction matters because Disney drawing experiences have historically included live human instruction. An archived official planDisney description of the former Animation Academy at Hollywood Studios said a Disney Cast Member guided guests through creating a character. More recently, the Animation Experience at Conservation Station offered step-by-step instruction with a Disney animator before that Animal Kingdom offering ended.
There is no verified evidence that Olaf Draws! uses artificial intelligence, and calling it an “AI attraction” would be inaccurate. Disney has not said the recorded format was chosen to cut labor costs or announced that Olaf Draws! eliminated specific jobs. Those claims should not be inferred from the format alone. Disney describes the experience specifically as recorded instruction from Disney Animation artists paired with an Audio-Animatronics Olaf.
Still, the design choice lands amid wider anxiety about automation replacing human interaction. Here, the automation is literal: an Audio-Animatronics character and prerecorded instruction take the place of the live-led format guests previously associated with Disney drawing classes.
Drawn to Wonderland Offers a Different Kind of Animation Space
Drawn to Wonderland is aimed at younger guests. The indoor playground takes its visual language from Disney Legend Mary Blair’s concept art for Alice in Wonderland, with environments based on the Mad Tea Party, Mad Hatter’s house, Queen of Hearts’ rose garden, and Tulgey Wood.
For families, that gives Hollywood Studios a climate-controlled play experience rather than another scheduled show or ride queue. Disney describes the area as a place for children to climb, wander, and create their own adventures.
The building also includes the Once Upon a Studio Theater, where the short film that inspired the project will screen. Inside the Magic has also been following early access to the finished animation experience ahead of its public debut.
The Biggest Question Is What Disney Means by Celebrating Artists
The Magic of Disney Animation opens September 14 with a strong premise: make the people, departments, techniques, and history behind Disney animation visible again. Off the Page! names production disciplines. Drawn to Wonderland foregrounds Mary Blair’s legacy. Olaf Draws! features instruction from accomplished Disney artists.
Yet Olaf Draws! creates a tension that will become easier to judge once regular guests experience it. A recorded lesson can give visitors access to prominent artists who could never personally teach every class, while an animatronic host can deliver a consistent show. But consistency is not the same as human interaction.
For now, the verified story is narrower than the larger AI debate: Disney has moved from a live-led drawing-class model to an animatronic host and recorded instruction, not generative AI. Whether guests see that as an inventive showcase for Disney artists or another example of theme-park experiences becoming more automated will become clearer after The Magic of Disney Animation officially opens September 14.
