Disney World Drains Hollywood Studios Area, Guests Receive New Notice
Something big changed at Disney’s Hollywood Studios recently, and it’s impossible to miss. Echo Lake, the calm little waterway that’s been part of the park’s scenery for decades, is completely bone dry right now, with construction scaffolding taking over what used to be peaceful water views. This is just one piece of a much bigger construction moment happening at Hollywood Studios right now. Here’s the full scoop on what’s going on and what it means for your next visit.

The Lake Is Empty, And the Boat’s Wrapped in Scaffolding
The work happening at Echo Lake is centered on the S.S. Down the Hatch, the boat shaped structure that’s home to Dockside Diner. Right now, the lake bed is totally empty, no water at all, and scaffolding covers major sections of the boat’s hull and upper deck. It’s a genuinely different look for a part of the park guests are used to seeing calm and reflective.
Wait Til Next Year (@brocmon1) shared a photo of the drained lake on X, “Today at DHS, when Echo Lake becomes Echo Puddle”.

Here’s the good news though. Dockside Diner is still open. Yeah, a big chunk of the building is wrapped in scaffolding, but the counter-service window is running like normal, serving the usual lunch and dinner menu during regular hours. You can even still grab a seat around the lake if you want to eat there.
Signs posted around the site keep it simple: “Please pardon our appearance. Keeping our city beautiful. Echo Lake is being refurbished for your future enjoyment.” No word yet on when it’s actually going to be done, so this altered version of Echo Lake isn’t going anywhere soon.
Here’s How We Got Here

WDWNT broke the story on August 17, reporting that guests showed up at Hollywood Studios to find the S.S. Down the Hatch completely surrounded by metal scaffolding, water side, dock side, both ends of the boat, all covered. That scaffolding went up right after Echo Lake got drained the week before, probably to give construction crews clean access to get this job done without water in the way.
Disney hasn’t put out any official statement about the drained lake or given a timeline for when it wraps up. For now, everyone’s just watching the construction progress in real time and reading whatever the signs tell them.
Gertie Just Got Fixed Up Too
Turns out this isn’t the only maintenance happening at Echo Lake lately either. Disney recently repaired the tail on Gertie the Dinosaur, another beloved landmark right there on the lake. The big green dinosaur building houses Dinosaur Gertie’s Ice Cream of Extinction, and that spot stayed open the entire time it was getting fixed, still running totally normal even with all the construction happening around it now.
Between fixing up Gertie and the current Dockside Diner project, Disney’s clearly been putting in work maintaining Echo Lake’s most iconic pieces, even if the timing made this whole stretch look more chaotic than usual with everything happening at once.
Hollywood Studios Is Basically a Construction Zone Right Now

And Echo Lake isn’t even the only thing under construction at Hollywood Studios. Just down the way near Star Wars, Galaxy’s Edge, Disney’s building an entirely new land inspired by Monsters, Inc. (2001). Totally separate project from what’s happening at Echo Lake, but together it paints a picture of a park that’s genuinely in the middle of a huge development push right now, with visible work happening in more than one spot.
If you’re into watching Disney’s expansion projects play out, Hollywood Studios is worth keeping an eye on right now, since there’s multiple things happening at the same time that have nothing to do with each other.
What This Means If You’ve Got a Trip Coming Up
Heading to Hollywood Studios soon? Adjust your expectations around Echo Lake specifically. It’s going to look totally different, empty lake bed, scaffolding everywhere, instead of the calm water views you’re probably picturing. But don’t worry, this isn’t going to actually mess with your day. Dockside Diner’s open with its full menu, Dinosaur Gertie’s Ice Cream of Extinction is running normal, and there’s still seating around the lake if you want to eat there.
If snapping photos of Echo Lake’s reflective water is normally part of your Hollywood Studios routine, you might want to hold off until this refurbishment is done, since the construction’s going to show up in the background of basically every shot from that angle right now. But if you’re the type who actually likes watching Disney’s construction unfold, this part of the park is honestly a pretty interesting spot to check out right now, between the Echo Lake work and the new Monsters, Inc. land taking shape nearby.
Have you eaten at Dockside Diner recently or seen the drained Echo Lake in person? Drop your thoughts and photos in the comments, we want to hear what you’ve noticed while this whole refurbishment plays out.
