Disney World Confirms Reopening at Hollywood Studios After Initial Indefinite Closure

Disney’s Hollywood Studios has quietly brought back one of its more low-key attractions after a brief closure tied to Star Wars Day merchandise operations.

The Mickey Shorts Theater, located on Commissary Lane, temporarily closed on April 29 while Walt Disney World used the indoor venue to support May the Fourth shopping and crowd control efforts. Disney did not initially announce when the theater would reopen, leaving some guests concerned the closure might continue past the annual Star Wars celebration.

The theater is home to Vacation Fun–An Original Animated Short with Mickey & Minnie, an attraction inspired by the modern Mickey Mouse cartoon shorts that aired on Disney Channel. The experience combines animated scenes with in-theater effects, giving guests a quick escape into a cartoon-style vacation adventure featuring Mickey, Minnie, and familiar Disney characters.

For many visitors, the attraction serves another important purpose beyond entertainment. With Central Florida temperatures already climbing, the indoor theater has become a popular stop for guests hoping to relax in air conditioning during a long park day. While Disney’s Hollywood Studios is known for larger thrill attractions like The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror and Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, Mickey Shorts Theater provides a slower-paced option geared toward families with younger kids and anyone looking to take a break from crowded walkways and long waits.

Disney converted the theater space into a merchandise distribution location for Star Wars Day festivities, one of the resort’s largest annual retail events. Each year, exclusive Star Wars products, specialty apparel, collectibles, and limited-edition releases attract large crowds at both Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resort.

To keep crowds manageable, Disney implemented virtual queues and controlled entry systems for shopping access throughout the event. Disney Springs also hosted similar shopping activations during the celebration period.

The temporary adjustment also reflects a growing pattern across Disney theme parks. In recent years, Disney has increasingly used attraction spaces and existing park infrastructure for limited-time retail experiences connected to major franchise launches and seasonal events. Star Wars, Marvel, and retro Disney Parks merchandise collections have become a major focus for fans visiting the resorts.

Thankfully for guests heading to Hollywood Studios this week, the closure appears to have been short-lived. As of May 7, Mickey Shorts Theater has reopened and resumed normal presentations of Vacation Fun–An Original Animated Short with Mickey & Minnie.

Although Disney only referred to the shutdown as temporary and never provided a reopening date, the quick turnaround suggests the company only needed the venue for short-term Star Wars Day operations instead of a larger refurbishment project or permanent replacement.

The situation has already sparked discussion among Disney Parks fans about how frequently attractions and indoor areas are being repurposed for retail events and special offerings.

At the Parks, he loves to ride Everest, stroll down Main Street with an overstuffed pin lanyard around his neck, and eat as many Mickey-shaped ice creams as possible.
