Before Murray’s name graced the big screen, he faced a battle for his own survival that shaped who he would become, both as an actor and a person. The actor recently shared this harrowing experience in an emotional interview that revealed just how close he came to losing his life at the age of 15.
This shocking chapter of Murray’s life is one he says had a profound impact on him, not only medically but emotionally, changing the course of his career.
A Near-Death Experience That Changed His Life
Murray’s near-death experience occurred when he was just a teenager, a young boy who was about to face a battle he never saw coming. As he explained on the Great Company podcast, Murray’s life was hanging by a thread when his intestines became twisted, leading to severe complications.

“It was a lot. We had surgery, I had internal bleeding, I lost 50 percent of my blood. I was on my deathbed. I just remember seeing my father, the weakest I’d ever seen him, and a priest at the end of my bed. They’re talking about last rites and all that stuff, and [the nurse, Sandy] gave me a blood transfusion to save my life. It saved my life.”
A Turning Point and a Second Chance
The blood transfusion Murray received was nothing short of a lifesaver. It saved him from certain death, but his recovery was just beginning. He spent two months in the hospital, undergoing more surgeries to repair the damage done by his twisted intestines.
“You’re in there for two months, and you know, my organs shut down because you have blood all coagulated around them, and they had to wait till everything [healed more]. So, anyway, I had to have a second surgery to clean everything up.”

Despite the intense recovery period, it was during this time that Murray’s life took an unexpected turn. While in the hospital, one of his nurses, Alana, saw potential in him and encouraged him to pursue modeling. This encounter, however, would spark a much larger career change, leading Murray into the world of acting.
A New Path to Stardom
After leaving the hospital, Murray’s future seemed uncertain, but Alana’s advice pushed him toward a career he had never truly considered before. “She told me that I should consider modeling. I told her I wasn’t really interested in being a model, but I did want to be an actor,” Murray explained.
Her suggestion wasn’t just a casual remark; she actually helped him get in touch with a modeling agency, opening the door to a new career path.

Not long after, Murray began landing modeling gigs, which eventually led to him being encouraged to move to Los Angeles to pursue acting. It wasn’t long before he started booking recurring roles in TV shows like Gilmore Girls and Dawson’s Creek. These opportunities set the stage for his breakthrough in movies and his eventual iconic roles in films like Freaky Friday and A Cinderella Story.
His journey from near-death to stardom is nothing short of remarkable. Murray credits the experience with shaping him into the person he is today, both professionally and personally. The trauma he endured at such a young age gave him a perspective on life that influences not only his work but his approach to challenges in his career.
From Tragedy to Triumph
Today, Chad Michael Murray is not only a beloved star in romantic Christmas movies but also a familiar face on television with his role in Sullivan’s Crossing. But his story goes far beyond his Hollywood fame. It’s a tale of resilience, survival, and the power of second chances. What could have been a tragic ending to a young life became the beginning of an acting career that continues to thrive today.
It was more than twenty years ago that Murray nearly lost his life, but as he shares, that experience shaped the trajectory of his career. That second chance allowed Murray to not only change his career but also use his experience to inspire others.
