As The Walt Disney Company collects more and more subsidiaries, the scope of its content gets more and more diverse. Even on its home streaming platform Disney Plus, not everything is appropriate for younger children to watch. Now, Disney Plus’ newest show, from a usually family-friendly franchise, has received a parental advisory label.
Marvel Studios’ projects have always portrayed a degree of violence, with battling superheroes and endless explosions, but up until now, depictions have been very mild and relatively harmless. However, the new series Secret Invasion takes a mature and dark turn in storytelling. It’s definitely a more mature narrative.
Families may be used to Marvel content with colorful superheroes, but parents will notice that Secret Invasion plays more like a sci-fi political drama. For the depictions of violence, the United Kingdom issued a parental advisory warning for the series. Its age rating in the UK is 16+, and the content warnings appear not only before the show but also in Disney Plus’ advertising.
“Parental Control Advised“ labels appear in the top corner of Marvel UK’s social media marketing for Secret Invasion. This is the first time such a warning has appeared on a Marvel project. That being said, the Disney parental advisory does not extend to viewers in the United States.
Secret Invasion on the US version of Disney Plus has an age rating of TV-14. As the show begins streaming, it warns of intense violence and strong coarse language. United States content rating stipulations are seemingly less strict than those in the United Kingdom.
Disney offers parental controls on its streaming platform that will filter out content unsuitable for young kids. As Marvel gets further and further into its planned development phases, it seems more and more of its content may get filtered out from a child profile.
