Disney Lifts Hannah Montana Suspension from Miley Cyrus After More Than a Decade
Get ready for a blast from the past — and maybe even a live rendition of “Nobody’s Perfect.” Miley Cyrus has finally been given the green light to perform her old Hannah Montana music again, more than a decade after she hung up the blonde wig and said goodbye to the Disney Channel.
Yes, seriously.
In a brand-new interview on The Ringer podcast, Miley dropped the bombshell fans have been wondering about for years: she’s never performed Hannah Montana music since leaving Disney because she legally couldn’t.
“After I left Disney, I wasn’t allowed to perform any of the Hannah Montana music,” Miley said. “It’s not like I wanted to — I mean, performing ‘The Best of Both Worlds’ between ‘We Can’t Stop’ and ‘Wrecking Ball’ wouldn’t have really made sense.”
Even though her edgy post-Disney career skyrocketed her into pop superstardom, Miley admitted it wasn’t easy to completely walk away from that part of her life.
“It was still sad knowing those songs have my voice, my face, and I wasn’t allowed to sing them.”
But all of that changed in 2024 when Miley was honored at Disney’s D23 Expo with a Disney Legend Award — a title reserved for some of the most iconic names in Disney history. And she made history too, becoming the youngest person ever to receive the honor.
With that recognition came a surprise gift: Disney gave her permission to perform Hannah Montana songs again.
“After being inducted as a Disney Legend, I was given permission to perform those songs in the future, which is pretty cool,” she added casually. (Understatement of the year.)
So Wait — She Wasn’t Allowed to Sing Hannah Songs?
Nope. Even though her face and voice were all over the music and the show, the Hannah Montana brand — including the songs — belonged entirely to Disney. That meant Miley couldn’t legally include the tracks in her concerts or re-record them.
So while fans dreamed of a surprise “If We Were a Movie” moment during her tours, Miley couldn’t go there — even if she wanted to.
Now that she’s got the green light, will she actually perform them? No plans have been announced yet, but the option is officially on the table. And judging by the way the internet exploded over this reveal, the fans are more than ready.
A Look Back: The Hannah Montana Era
In case you missed it (or just want to relive it), Hannah Montana premiered on Disney Channel in 2006 and became one of the biggest hits in the network’s history. Miley played Miley Stewart, a teenager living a double life as a pop star — and yes, it was as iconic as it sounds.
Here’s what the show racked up over four seasons:
-
98 episodes
-
Four No. 1 soundtrack albums
-
One feature film (Hannah Montana: The Movie) that grossed $155 million worldwide
-
A world tour that sold out arenas
-
Mega-hits like “The Best of Both Worlds,” “Rock Star,” “Nobody’s Perfect,” and “The Climb”
At one point, the Hannah Montana franchise was so big it had its own section in department stores — clothes, dolls, posters, you name it. And at the center of it all was Miley, singing and acting in front of millions before she could even drive.
Miley’s Transformation — and the Full Circle Moment
After wrapping Hannah Montana in 2011, Miley made a hard pivot. With albums like Bangerz, Younger Now, and Plastic Hearts, she redefined her image — and made sure the world knew she was in charge of her own story. And while she never disrespected the Hannah legacy, she never returned to it either. Until now.
When she accepted her Disney Legend award at D23, she delivered a speech that gave every millennial in the audience chills.
“A little bit of everything has changed… but at the same time, nothing has changed at all. I stand here still proud to have been Hannah Montana. In so many ways, this award is dedicated to Hannah and all of her amazing loyal fans… To quote the legend herself, ‘This is the life.’”
What’s Next?
So far, Miley hasn’t confirmed whether Hannah Montana music will make it into future concerts, setlists, or special events — but fans are already begging for a revival moment, or maybe even a Best of Both Worlds anniversary tour.
Now that she can sing the songs again, anything’s possible. So don’t be surprised if “Who Said” randomly shows up during her next festival set.
Because after all this time, she finally has the best of both worlds — and she’s in full control.
