Whip up a cup of hot cocoa and turn on the Christmas carols because it is nearly Christmastime! Okay, it’s only September, but it’s never too early to talk about the holiday season or the new Christmas series coming to Disney+ based on the popular Disney trilogy — The Santa Clause. The original Santa Clause films star Tim Allen as Scott Calvin — a toy company executive who is forced to become Kris Kringle when Santa falls off of his roof while delivering toys. By becoming Santa, Scott is able to see how the person he was was driving away the only people who cared about him. He decides to remain in the role of Santa and bring joy to children all over the world.
It has been 16 years since fans last saw Scott Calvin, his family, and the elves of the North Pole (and who could forget the reindeer!) in The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause. However, this November — November 14 to be exact — Scott Calvin, AKA Santa Claus, will be back and better than ever in the new series, The Santa Clauses!
Before the D23 Expo that was held in Anaheim, California from September 9 through September 11, we knew that the series would also star actors from the original films, including Elizabeth Mitchell, who plays Carol/Mrs. Claus, as well as David Krumholtz, who would be returning to the role of Bernard that he played in The Santa Clause and The Santa Clause 2. Since The Santa Clauses will feature Scott and Carol’s two kids, that left many wondering, “What about Scott’s son Charlie?”
In case you don’t remember, Charlie is Scott’s son from his first marriage to Laura. Scott and Charlie had a pretty fractured relationship until Scott embraced his inner Santa Claus. Charlie appeared in all three Santa Claus films. Up until the D23 Expo, no mention had been made of Charlie, and people thought maybe the series wouldn’t feature him at all. HOWEVER, at The Santa Clauses panel at the Expo, one showrunner accidentally confirmed that Charlie was, in fact, going to be a part of the show.
The panel — which featured actors Allen, Mitchell, Kal Penn, Austin Kane, Elizabeth Allen Dick, Matilda Lawler, Rupali Redd, and Devin Bright — showrunner Jack Burditt was talking about how they couldn’t get everyone in the series that they wanted to — including characters like Mother Nature, who we saw in The Santa Clause 3. He then said that Eric Lloyd — who played Charlie — would be coming back! The audience gasped, and Burditt asked if the audience didn’t know that was happening. The cast then laughed, and Tim Allen asked the audience to forget what they had just heard.
So there you have it, folks! Showrunners have confirmed that Charlie will be back! Now, we don’t know how many episodes he will be in or how big his role will be. But since the series is about Scott wanting to hang up his Santa coat and retire, it only makes sense that the boy who made him embrace the role of Father Christmas should return for his retirement.
Here is more information on The Santa Clauses series:
Scott Calvin is back! After being Santa Claus for nearly thirty years, he’s as jolly as ever. But as Christmas declines in popularity, so does his Santa magic. Scott struggles to keep up with the demands of the job, as well as being there for his family. Upon discovering there is a way to retire from his post, Scott considers stepping down as Santa Claus and finding a worthy successor so that he can become a better father and husband.
During the D23 Expo, Disney also released the trailer for The Santa Clauses, which you can watch below.
