Guest Notice: Disney Restores Iconic Shows to Hollywood Studios This Month
Hollywood Studios is preparing to bring back two iconic theme park shows.
For most guests, the park’s evening entertainment currently revolves around Fantasmic!, the long-running spectacular staged inside the Hollywood Hills Amphitheater. Disney often schedules two performances, commonly at 9 p.m. and 10:30 p.m.
Daytime entertainment is spread more widely across the park. The current lineup includes Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular!, Beauty and the Beast – Live on Stage, The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure, and Disney Villains: Unfairly Ever After.
That balance will change this month. On August 9, Disney will restore two projection shows to the Chinese Theatre, bringing another nighttime entertainment hub back to Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
Hollywood Boulevard Gets Its Nighttime Shows Back
Disney Movie Magic will return at 8:40 p.m., immediately followed by Wonderful World of Animation at 9 p.m.
The two productions turn the Chinese Theatre into a large projection surface using film clips, music, lighting, lasers, and other visual effects.
Disney Movie Magic concentrates on Disney’s live-action catalog. Its quick-moving sequence features musicals, comedies, fantasy films, science-fiction stories, and adventure franchises from throughout the studio’s history.
Its shorter format makes it a relatively easy addition to an evening at Hollywood Studios. Guests do not need to enter a dedicated theater, find a seat, or leave Hollywood Boulevard to see the show.
Wonderful World of Animation begins 20 minutes later. The 12-minute production shifts the focus to Disney and Pixar films, moving through stories built around friendship, family, romance, magic, and adventure.
Mickey Mouse appears at both the beginning and end, framing the show around the character whose 1928 debut helped establish Disney’s animation legacy.
Together, the returning shows restore a pairing that once gave the Chinese Theatre a larger role in the park’s nighttime schedule.
The location is especially convenient for guests approaching the park entrance or spending the evening around Hollywood Boulevard, Echo Lake, or nearby attractions.
The 9 p.m. performance of Wonderful World of Animation also overlaps with the first showing of Fantasmic!. That gives guests a choice between two different nighttime experiences rather than directing nearly everyone toward the same amphitheater.
Splitting the audience may also reduce some of the pressure around the Hollywood Hills Amphitheater, where guests often begin waiting well before the first performance.
Visitors who choose the Chinese Theatre shows can remain near the front of the park, while those seeking a longer production can continue toward Fantasmic!.
The Park Is Still Missing a Larger Spectacular
Although Hollywood Studios will soon offer three nighttime shows, its entertainment lineup remains smaller than it was before Walt Disney World’s 2020 closure.
The most notable absence is Star Wars: A Galactic Spectacular, which debuted in June 2016.
The fireworks show stopped running when Walt Disney World closed in March 2020. It did not return when Hollywood Studios reopened, and Disney has not announced plans to revive it.
Another former Chinese Theatre production, Jingle Bell, Jingle BAM!, also debuted in 2016.
The seasonal show used projections, lasers, fireworks, music, and characters from the Prep & Landing franchise to create a Christmas-themed spectacular for regular park guests.
It remained part of the standard holiday lineup through early 2020. Disney later revived it for Disney Jollywood Nights, meaning access now requires admission to the park’s separately ticketed Christmas event.
The return of Disney Movie Magic and Wonderful World of Animation does not fill the fireworks-sized gap left by those productions.
It does, however, give Hollywood Studios a more varied evening schedule and restores entertainment that many returning visitors will recognize.
