Disney Guests Evacuated as Firefighters Descend on Theme Park

One Disney theme park faced an unexpected emergency today.

Disney parks attract millions of visitors each year, with large crowds gathering for attractions, character encounters, and live entertainment. While temporary ride closures are relatively common, incidents requiring emergency services can lead to more significant disruptions.

The areas surrounding Disney’s iconic castles are among the busiest parts of its theme parks. These locations often serve as central meeting points, connecting different themed lands while providing viewing areas for parades, fireworks, and other performances.

On Tuesday, October 20, firefighters responded to a reported gas leak at Disneyland Paris, prompting the evacuation of guests from an area near Sleeping Beauty Castle.

The incident forced Disney to temporarily close Central Plaza, located at the end of Main Street, U.S.A., as emergency crews investigated reports of a strong smell of gas. Cast Members were deployed to redirect guests away from the affected area.

Firefighters Respond to Emergency at Disney Park

The evacuation was first reported by Disneyland Paris news account DLP Works, which shared an update on X as the incident unfolded.

According to the account, firefighters arrived at Disneyland Park after reports of a gas leak near Central Plaza. The area was subsequently cleared of visitors, with access restricted while emergency personnel attended the scene.

Disney’s Guest Flow teams were also reportedly deployed to manage crowd movements, directing visitors toward other areas of the park.

Despite the emergency, Frontierland, Adventureland, Fantasyland, and Discoveryland remained open. The evacuation was limited to part of Disneyland Park rather than the entire theme park resort.

Guests visiting Disneyland Paris described further disruptions on social media. In a Reddit discussion about the incident, visitors reported unexpected pathway closures, interrupted attraction operations, and the cancellation of a parade.

One guest claimed they had been evacuated from the parade route, while another reported seeing a fire hose near Sleeping Beauty Castle. These accounts have not been independently verified.

The disruption occurred during Disneyland Paris’ Halloween celebrations, which run from September 26 through November 1, 2026. The seasonal event features special entertainment, decorations, and appearances by Disney Villains throughout the resort.

Disneyland Park also hosts Disney Stars on Parade and the nighttime spectacular Disney Tales of Magic, which features projections and effects around Sleeping Beauty Castle and Main Street, U.S.A.

By approximately 3 p.m. local time, Central Plaza had reopened to visitors, according to subsequent reports. However, access remained restricted along a pathway between the Castle Stage and Central Plaza.

The reported leak was traced to an area beneath a manhole cover along the affected pathway. The remaining closure allowed crews to continue addressing the situation while guests returned to the surrounding plaza.

No timetable was immediately available for the reopening of the remaining restricted pathway. Disneyland Paris had also not issued a public statement confirming the reported gas leak at the time of the initial coverage.

Disneyland Paris Has Faced Similar Evacuations Before

Tuesday’s incident was not the first time a suspected gas leak had prompted evacuations at the French Disney resort.

In February 2007, hundreds of Disneyland Paris guests were evacuated from Frontierland on two consecutive days after a gas leak was detected near Phantom Manor and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.

According to French newspaper Le Parisien, the evacuations took place on Friday and Saturday, February 16 and 17, with visitors moved beyond a designated safety perimeter.

Engineers from Gaz de France subsequently investigated the underground gas network, eventually locating the leak in a section that was not considered essential to the system’s operation.

The incident also affected the nearby Colonel Hathi’s Pizza Outpost restaurant, which remained closed on February 19. Repairs were scheduled for after the park’s operating hours.

Another emergency response occurred at Disneyland Paris in September 2020, when smoke was reported near Thunder Mesa Riverboat Landing in Frontierland.

The smoke was reportedly traced to a technical area near the attraction. According to Le Parisien, no guests aboard the riverboat were affected or suffered smoke inhalation.

Disneyland Paris has also previously conducted large-scale emergency drills alongside French emergency services. In November 2006, the resort participated in an exercise simulating a serious accident involving Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.

The exercise involved firefighters, police officers, and emergency medical personnel, testing the resort’s ability to respond to a major incident and coordinate emergency operations.

As for Tuesday’s evacuation, Central Plaza has since reopened, although the remaining pathway restrictions were still in place as of the latest reported update.

The incident comes as Disneyland Paris continues its Halloween celebrations, with the resort scheduled to begin its Disney Enchanted Christmas season on November 7.
