Disney appears to be phasing out She-Hulk from its Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) roster on Disney+ just weeks after recasting the character’s lead role in a separate project.
The Marvel era on Disney+ has been a mixed bag, but few shows have polarized fans quite as strongly as She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. Starring Tatiana Maslany as Jennifer Walters, the series chronicled the life of a lawyer who gains Hulk-like powers after an accidental blood contamination from her cousin Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo).
The show’s bold approach, featuring frequent fourth-wall breaks and even a cameo by Megan Thee Stallion, divided audiences. While some appreciated its unique storytelling, others criticized its CGI, writing, and focus on female characters, sparking a wave of backlash.
As Maslany humorously noted in January, the show’s budget issues likely sealed its fate: “I think we blew our budget, and Disney was like, ‘No, thanks.’”
Despite fans holding out hope for a return, Disney’s recent actions suggest She-Hulk’s MCU future may be uncertain.
Disney+ has updated its Marvel Studios banner – which highlights the franchise’s core heroes – and replaced She-Hulk with Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds).
To say that the Deadpool franchise is more popular than She-Hulk would be an understatement. The most recent release in the blockbuster series, Deadpool & Wolverine (2024), crossed the $1 billion mark at the box office, with the Deadpool character meet-and-greet also making quite the splash when it arrived at Disneyland Resort earlier this year.
The move seems to signal a shift in focus toward more bankable characters in the MCU’s Multiverse Saga. This doesn’t come as a huge surprise considering recent changes within the franchise. In the wake of multiple flops such as Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania (2023) and The Marvels (2023), the studio has reoriented its focus both on Disney+ and the big screen to ensure quantity over quality.
This isn’t the only change for She-Hulk. In October, Saved by the Bell actress Tiffani Thiessen replaced Maslany as the voice of the character in LEGO Marvel Avengers: Mission Demolition. Thiessen also stepped in for Laura Post, who had previously voiced the character in earlier LEGO adaptations.
While She-Hulk’s removal from Disney+ promotional materials doesn’t confirm her permanent departure, it raises questions about her place in Marvel’s future lineup. Fans continue to debate whether the character deserves another shot in the MCU.
