Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend is the top runDisney event of the year. This week, thousands of runners headed down to Walt Disney World to participate in the 2024 runDisney weekend. After months of training, runners could have their race impacted drastically by the weather this weekend.
One Orlando-based news site, Click Orlando, looked intensely at the solid cold front heading into the area as the weekend nears. This cold front could have a significant impact on the runs that are scheduled to take place this weekend at Walt Disney World.
The front is expected to hit the area Saturday morning. This is when the half-marathon is scheduled throughout the Walt Disney World Resort. Predictions are that strong and possibly severe storms and lightning will enter the area Saturday morning.
Damaging winds, small hail, and even a chance of tornadoes could all be part of the storm front. Since the half-marathon is set to begin Saturday at 5:00 a.m., the concern is that this storm could drastically impact runners.
The forecast indicates the storm should move through the area into Sunday afternoon and evening. Hopefully, the full marathon might see rain but won’t see severe storms.
Guests in the area should ensure notifications are allowed in their My Disney Experience account, as Disney will push out information through their app.
The weather has impacted runDisney events in the past. Storms have canceled runs, and heat has shortened courses to keep runners safe. We know that runDisney and the Walt Disney World cast members will work to make sure all runners and spectators remain safe before, during, and after the race.
Disney Marathon Weekend
Disney Marathon Weekend takes place each year during the first part of January. This week, the event occurs from Thursday, January 4, through Sunday, January 7. The marathon weekend includes four races of different lengths.
Runners can run a 5k, 10k, half-marathon, and full marathon throughout the race weekend. As the most popular race of the year at Disney, around 20,000+ runners head down to participate each year.
runDisney hosts a variety of other events throughout the year. Princess Half-Marathon Weekend will take place from February 22-26, 2024. Springtime Surprise Weekend is a fun, themed event from April 18-21.
