A new construction permit filed for CommuniCore Plaza at EPCOT signals that something new is coming to one of Walt Disney World Resort‘s most central gathering spaces.
What the Permit Reveals

On July 2, Walt Disney Imagineering filed a Notice of Commencement to “install set elements” at 1940 Avenue of the Stars — the approximate address of CommuniCore Plaza at EPCOT. The document names Jon Richards Company FL as the third-party contractor for the work, a firm with an extensive theme park portfolio that includes facade work in Fantasyland at Disneyland Park and the iconic Universal Studios globe at Universal Orlando Resort.
The identity of the filing party matters here. Walt Disney World Resort’s Facility Assets Management team typically handles basic maintenance and routine upkeep through its own filings. When Walt Disney Imagineering submits a Notice of Commencement directly, it’s generally a signal that something more creative or guest-facing is in the works — a new installation, updated set elements, or a refreshed experience rather than behind-the-scenes repairs.

The permit carries a one-year expiration date from its July 2 filing, though the actual work could be completed well before that window closes.
What Might Be Coming
CommuniCore Plaza opened in 2024 as part of the broader transformation of EPCOT’s former Future World into the World Celebration, World Nature, and World Discovery neighborhoods. The plaza and its adjoining CommuniCore Hall event space have since become one of EPCOT’s most versatile programming areas, hosting seasonal events and rotating entertainment offerings throughout the year.

The stage at CommuniCore Plaza is currently presenting an Encanto (2021) sing-along show. With the EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival set to launch on August 27, the new permit could point toward preparations for festival-specific installations in the area — though Walt Disney World Resort has not confirmed any connection between the filing and the upcoming event.
No Disruption to Guests…Yet

For now, CommuniCore Plaza remains fully accessible to EPCOT guests, and the Encanto sing-along continues running multiple times daily. Walt Disney World Resort has not commented on the permit or shared any details about what guests should expect in the area in the coming weeks.
