Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” has long held a special place in our hearts, bringing festive cheer and timeless moral lessons. Written in 1843, this classic story about generosity and transformation may not be every child’s bedtime choice (creepy ghosts!), but it has been made delightfully accessible through adaptations like 1992’s The Muppet Christmas Carol.

This unique version effortlessly blends Dickens’ Victorian tale with the Muppets’ iconic charm, creating a movie experience that feels both familiar and new. While other adaptations, like the 3D-animated A Christmas Carol featuring Jim Carrey, strive for accuracy, The Muppet Christmas Carol steals the show with its universal appeal and unforgettable Muppet magic.

Famous for songs like “One More Sleep ’Til Christmas” and “Thankful Heart”, this holiday gem has even enjoyed live orchestra performances in the UK. If you missed out on previous live renditions, worry not—this winter, The Muppet Christmas Carol returns to theaters, bringing extra warmth and holiday spirit with a concert experience.

The score, beautifully composed by Miles Goodman (known for Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and Little Shop of Horrors) and with songs by the legendary Paul Williams (behind hits like Rainbow Connection and Evergreen), will once again fill theaters, bringing joy to fans new and old.

Disney+ describes this version of the story as “merry, magical,” and they’re not wrong. Michael Caine shines as Ebenezer Scrooge, with Kermit as the kind Bob Cratchit and Gonzo narrating as Charles Dickens. True to Dickens’ original message, we follow Scrooge as he’s visited by the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future, only this time with a Muppet twist that makes the experience truly unforgettable.

The restored song “When Love Is Gone”, initially left out of the American release, is included in the concert version, adding a beautiful moment to an already heart-warming tale.

The Muppet Christmas Carol stars Kermit the Frog/Bob Cratchit (Steve Whitmire), Miss Piggy/Emily Cratchit (Frank Oz), The Great Gonzo/Charles Dickens/Narrator (Dave Goelz), Fozzie Bear/Fozziewig (Frank Oz), and Ebenezer Scrooge (Michael Caine).

“Tis the season for love, laughter and one of the most cherished stories of all time. Join Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy and all the hilarious Muppets in this merry, magical version of Charles Dickens’ classic tale,” the official Disney+ synopsis reads, adding that “Michael Caine gives a performance that’s anything but ‘bah, humbug’ as greedy, penny-pinching Ebenezer Scrooge.” Those familiar with Dicken’s novella will know that “One fateful Christmas Eve, Scrooge is visited by the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future.” However, with a Muppets twist thrown in for good measure, “Together with kind, humble Bob Cratchit (Kermit the Frog) and his family, the Spirits open Scrooge’s eyes — and his heart — to the true meaning of Christmas.”
