Carousel of Progress Overhaul: Disney Officially Unveils Reopening Details for 2027

For months, one familiar corner of Tomorrowland has looked very different.

Guests visiting Magic Kingdom have had to walk past Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress without getting the chance to step inside. The attraction has remained closed while Disney works on a major overhaul, leaving one important question hanging over the project: when will it finally return?

There’s now a much better answer.

Disney has narrowed the reopening to late spring 2027. An exact date remains unknown, but the new window gives guests a clearer timeline and raises another question. Could Disney be preparing to bring the attraction back right before its summer season begins?

Carousel of Progress Won’t Be the Same Experience

This closure isn’t about completing a few repairs and reopening the doors.

Disney is making substantial changes to the Carousel of Progress while keeping the attraction’s basic idea intact. Guests will still follow an American family through different periods as technology changes the way people live, but portions of that journey are being reimagined.

Disney is also changing the decades represented in the attraction.

One of the most notable additions, however, comes before guests begin traveling through those different periods.

Disney has confirmed that a Walt Disney Audio-Animatronic figure will appear in a new introductory scene. It creates another direct connection between the attraction and Walt, who helped develop Carousel of Progress for the 1964-1965 New York World’s Fair.

That history makes the current project especially notable.

Instead of removing Carousel of Progress and replacing it with another attraction, Disney is updating a Tomorrowland experience that has remained connected to Walt for generations.

Completing that work has required a lengthy closure.

Carousel of Progress shut down on July 6, 2026. It will remain unavailable for many more months before guests get their first look at the reimagined experience.

Disney Narrows the Reopening Timeline

Disney has now confirmed that Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress is scheduled to return in late spring 2027.

That still leaves some room for interpretation.

Disney hasn’t announced a specific date, so guests planning spring vacations shouldn’t assume the attraction will be operating during their trips. However, the new timeframe gives visitors much more information than simply knowing it will return sometime in 2027.

Depending on the eventual date, Carousel of Progress could spend close to a year behind closed doors.

That would be a significant amount of downtime for an attraction that operated for decades with comparatively smaller updates. However, Disney’s plans extend beyond basic refurbishment work, with reimagined scenes, different decades, and the new Walt Disney introduction all part of the project.

Now the focus turns to exactly when Disney might be ready.

Late May Could Be Worth Watching

One possible period stands out on Disney World’s recent calendar: the end of May.

Disney packed several debuts, reopenings, and new experiences around the final days of May 2026. That period also aligns closely with Memorial Day weekend and the unofficial start of the summer travel season.

It wouldn’t be surprising to see Disney use a similar strategy with Carousel of Progress.

A reopening during the final week of May 2027 could give Magic Kingdom another refreshed experience, just as more families begin arriving for summer vacations. Disney has also used this part of the year for seasonal offerings such as Cool Kid Summer.

Still, late spring doesn’t automatically mean late May.

April could also fit Disney’s description and would allow the attraction to resume operations before summer crowds arrive.

March represents an earlier possibility. The 2027 EPCOT International Flower & Garden Festival begins March 10, kicking off a major spring period across Walt Disney World. However, March would fall toward the early side of what guests might interpret as a late-spring return.

For that reason, April and May appear to fit Disney’s wording more naturally.

None of those possibilities should be treated as an unofficial reopening date, though. Disney has only committed to late spring.

Tomorrowland’s Long Wait Finally Has an End in Sight

Carousel of Progress will eventually return to a Tomorrowland that has been without the attraction for months.

When it does, guests won’t simply walk back into the same experience that disappeared in July 2026. Disney is updating its journey through different decades while bringing Walt Disney into the attraction through a new Audio-Animatronic introduction.

The biggest mystery now is the exact reopening date.

April remains possible, and a late-May debut could line up well with Disney World’s transition toward its summer season. Until Disney reveals more, late spring 2027 remains the only confirmed timeframe.

For fans who have spent months watching the attraction sit closed, however, the wait finally has a more defined finish line.
