The State of Florida has just seen its highest one-day total of new COVID-19 cases since the coronavirus pandemic began.
Per The Orlando Sentinel, the Sunshine State reported 31,758 new COVID-19 cases today. This total breaks Florida’s all-time record for the highest number of new COVID cases in one day, which was previously 27,802 new cases, set on August 26, 2021, during the outbreak of the Delta variant of the virus that has caused nearly 800,000 in the United States, according to data from the United States Centers for Disease Control.
The latest variant of the virus, Omicron, was first detected in November. Several countries’ governments pushed for travel bans, including the United States, to countries in South Africa, but to no avail, as the variant had spread and has now been found in countries all over the world.
The news of Florida’s highest one-day total for new coronavirus cases comes in the midst of the holiday season celebrations at central Florida theme parks like Disney World and Universal Studios. Universal announced that effective today, Christmas Eve, masks would be required indoors, regardless of vaccination status.
