Most Disney Park refurbishments are proactive measures aimed at improving the safety and reliability of attractions. Over the years, rides at Disneyland Resort, including Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, have undergone various refurbishments to maintain safety standards and enhance guest experiences.

History of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, which first opened at Disneyland Park in 1979, quickly became a hallmark of Frontierland. Its success led to the debut of similar attractions at other Disney locations, including Magic Kingdom Park at Walt Disney World Resort, Tokyo Disneyland, and Disneyland Paris. Each iteration of the ride allows guests to embark on a scenic, high-speed journey through a visually stunning and whimsically crafted mining town.

Recent Incidents and Safety Concerns

In recent months, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad has undergone several evacuations, highlighting its potential need for refurbishment. In one notable case, a family was evacuated from the ride when alarms went off due to an unknown issue.

Mechanical failures are not uncommon in amusement park rides, given the extensive operation and wear experienced day in and day out at Disneyland Resort. Frequent breakdowns may cause some apprehension among enthusiasts, but Disney parks have a strong reputation for maintaining attractions, and such incidents often prompt immediate attention and repair work.

Sometimes, evacuations aren’t the fault of the ride itself. In one instance, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad was evacuated after a child jumped the fence and triggered a safety censor.
