When it comes to rides and attractions at Disney Parks, there are some that just rank above the rest in terms of how popular they are and how many Guests consider them a must-do during their Disney day. One of those attractions is Big Thunder Mountain Railroad — which can be found in Frontierland Disneyland Resort, Walt Disney World Resort, and Disneyland Paris. The attraction can also be found in Westernland at the Tokyo Disney Resort. Big Thunder Mountain is a quintessential Disney ride, and we have now learned that Disney is giving the ride its very own movie.
In an exclusive report from Deadline, a Big Thunder Mountain movie is in the works, and it will be directed by Bert and Bertie, the duo behind Marvel’s Hawkeye series that was made for Disney+. Per Deadline:
Disney’s next feature film based on one of its classic theme park rides looks to be getting ready to leave the station as sources tell Deadline Bert & Bertie are in negotiations to direct a new feature film based on the Big Thunder Mountain attraction at Disney Theme Parks. LuckyChap Entertainment and Scott Free are producing with Kieran and Michele Mulroney writing the script…
As for Bert & Bertie, the directing duo was already in the studio’s good graces after getting high marks for directing a majority of the Marvel Hawkeye series for Disney+. Even with that strong relationship, the two needed to deliver a presentation to studio execs and sources say from the start, Disney was excited about their vision of what this film could be.
This is not the first movie made by Disney based on a popular attraction. One of the company’s most popular franchises based on an attraction is Pirates of the Caribbean. Disney also found massive success with Jungle Cruise and a sequel film is in the works with Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt reprising their roles as Frank Wolff and Lily Houghton. Currently, Disney is hard at work on its newest attraction-based film, The Haunted Mansion. The film is set to star Rosario Dawson, Owen Wilson, Tiffany Haddish, and Danny DeVito.
Disney has not shared plot details for the Big Thunder Mountain film at this time. However, with the D23 Expo coming up in September, it is possible we could learn more then. Disney Dining will keep readers updated as more details are shared.
