A Special Announcement
On January 15, Disney’s Vice President of Animals, Science, and Environment, Dr. Mark Penning, shared the joyful news on Instagram.
Mae, an Asian small-clawed otter, recently gave birth to a litter of pups, and the heartwarming update has fans of the park swooning. As the smallest otter species in the world, these pups have already captured hearts with their unique charm and adorable antics.
Here’s what Dr. Penning had to say in his Instagram post:
Mae, an Asian small-clawed otter mom, recently welcomed a litter of pups at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. 🦦🐾 As the smallest otter species, these pups are already showing their unique charm. As you can see from these photos, mom is taking care of the otter pups backstage when they are not napping. The dad, Kevin, is also actively involved in the process of taking care of these new additions. Over the next few months, they will reach key milestones, like opening their eyes, trying solid foods, and learning to swim. The animal care team is closely watching their progress as they grow. Look for these pint-sized pups on Discovery Island soon!

What Makes Asian Small-Clawed Otters Unique?
Asian small-clawed otters are not just adorable; they are fascinating creatures with remarkable traits. Known for their dexterous paws and strong familial bonds, these otters are a joy to observe. They are the smallest otter species, and their size allows them to thrive in a variety of habitats.
At Animal Kingdom, these otters are ambassadors for conservation, raising awareness about the importance of protecting wetlands and rivers, which are critical to their survival.
The arrival of Mae’s pups marks another step in Disney’s ongoing conservation efforts. The company’s animal care team is providing round-the-clock support to ensure the pups grow up healthy and strong.
Although the pups are not yet ready for public viewing, they’ll soon make their debut at Otter Grotto on Discovery Island. Disney’s animal care team is prioritizing the health and well-being of the pups, ensuring they have ample time to bond with their parents, Mae and Kevin.
Once the pups are ready, they’ll join the other animals at the Otter Grotto, where guests can witness their playful and curious nature up close.
