If there is anything we have learned this year, it’s that Halloween costumes can easily become offensive.

Every Halloween season, millions of people celebrate by dressing up in fun and festive costumes. Whether it’s spooky or silly, you can truly be anything on Halloween. Many fans choose to celebrate by dressing up as their favorite celebrity. There are so many awesome actors, singers, models, and athletes to emulate; it makes sense why this is a popular choice.

However, one actress’s costume has actually resulted in her being “cancelled” online by disappointed fans. The costume in question was of the actor and musician Johnny Depp.

Word of Warning: Perhaps Skip Depp as Your Costume

Dressing up as one of Johnny Depp’s characters is quite a common occurrence. Every year, costumes depicting Captain Jack Sparrow, Willy  Wonka, and Edward Scissorhands are popular. What is not so socially acceptable is dressing up as defamation trial-era Johnny Depp alongside his ex-wife, actress Amber Heard.

Actress Emily Hampshire, of Schitt’s Creek stardom, has come under fire recently for her choice of costume, which depicted her as Johnny Depp alongside a friend as Amber Heard. The costume immediately sparked controversy and received significant backlash from the public. Many argued that it was highly insensitive, given the severity of the domestic abuse case that unfolded between Depp and Heard last year.

The highly publicized trial of Johnny Depp and his ex-wife Amber Heard captivated the attention of audiences around the world when it unfolded last year. This legal battle between two prominent Hollywood actors has been rife with controversy and allegations, shedding light on the darker side of celebrity relationships.

The court case brought to light serious topics, including substance abuse and domestic violence. The entire situation was extremely hard on all parties involved, and the severity of it should not be taken lightly. It is for this reason that fans were quick to judge Emily Hampshire for making light of it with a costume.

Hampshire Makes Public Apology After Backlash

Realizing the impact her costume had on others, Emily Hampshire took the opportunity to publicly apologize for her insensitivity. In a heartfelt statement, she expressed remorse for her actions and acknowledged the pain and hurt that her choice of costume caused to those affected by domestic violence. Hampshire recognized that domestic abuse is a grave issue that should never be trivialized or made light of. In a social media Instagram post, Hampshire apologizes, saying;

“I want to address what is one of the most thoughtless, insensitive, and ignorant things I’ve ever done. For Halloween, I stupidly thought it would be funny to dress as Johnny Depp and Amber Heard. I am deeply sorry and ashamed for putting something that awful out in the universe. Domestic abuse is never, ever funny. These are real issues with real people and I REALLY regret my actions.”

  1. Depp’s sizeable fan base is not infatuated with the actor.We love and respect this generous man of great character. Disney showed great disrespect, have never apologized for their convict and punish prior to the trial behavior. No Depp, no billion dollar profits for Disney. Get it?
