A Favorite Walt Disney World Playground Reopens!

When Walt Disney World began it’s phased reopening in Summer 2020, it was no surprise that several experiences remained closed as Disney did their best to keep COVID safety guidelines in mind with physical distancing and keeping high touch areas closed. Despite several experiences still closed throughout the property, Disney has made progress with reopening several restaurants, attractions, and entertainment portions of their parks and resorts. As of recently, the fantastic Dumbo attraction playground reopened. Now, we’re seeing another favorite Walt Disney World playground finally make a return!

Disney’s Animal Kingdom “The Boneyard” playground has officially reopened! While we’re thrilled to see this family-friendly attraction reopen, we are slightly surprised Disney chose now to open it. COVID cases are on the rise in Central Florida, and Orange County (which includes much of Walt Disney World property) remains under a state of emergency. On top of that, we’ve seen a COVID outbreak spread through Disney’s first responders. Nonetheless, The Boneyard is finally opening its gates once again.

The Boneyard isn’t the only recent reopening at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. You’ll find A Celebration of Festival of the Lion King is now open in Africa. We’ve also seen the return of modified character dining in the Park as Tusker House has reopened. And if you’re looking for a quick-service restaurant, Pizzafari has reopened its doors!

Are your kiddos ready to stretch out and roam the open-air playground? The Boneyard playground is described by Disney as, “Fun with Fossils: A world of prehistoric marvels awaits! Kids ages 10 and under are invited to clamber across rope bridges, climb through mysterious caves and hurl down twisting slides. At the dig site, help excavate fossils from a Triceratops and a Tyrannosaurus Rex. Discover lots more dino-sized surprises as you have a blast digging up the past. Parents of busy explorers can enjoy a shaded seating area at the dig site, where large fans help cool things down.”

Ready to head to The Boneyard to let your kids in on the action? Currently, the hours of operation for most days are 9 am – 7 pm. Be sure to check your My Disney Experience App for the most up-to-date Park and attractions hours.

About Mike and Jamie Sylvester

We are Disney nerds. Two kids at heart who love the magic and the memories of Walt Disney World! We follow all things Disney and have great experiences with Disney Vacation Club and runDisney events in particular. We enjoy the vacations, day trips, weekend getaways, and geek out over the planning of such events. From lodging to dining we have a spreadsheet for every occasion. Mike’s frivolous Disney goal is to acquire a magic band of every style while Jamie’s goal is to experience as many Disney desserts as possible. There isn’t a day that passes without some discussion of the master plan of our next trip to the happiest place on earth. Most people think we’re normal – until they travel to Disney with us. We have been married for 18 years and are blessed with a daughter and a son who have already learned the importance of planning ahead! As a family, we thoroughly enjoy the magic and the memories at Walt Disney World and are here to help others experience the magic as well.
