Disney Announces Closure of 8-Year-Old Toy Story Land Roller Coaster

Another Disney roller coaster is preparing to shut down.

Disney’s Toy Story franchise has become a staple of its theme parks, with attractions inspired by Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and the rest of Andy’s toys scattered across multiple resorts. At Walt Disney World, Toy Story Land has been a fixture of Disney’s Hollywood Studios since 2018.

The Florida land features three attractions: Slinky Dog Dash, Alien Swirling Saucers, and Toy Story Mania! Elsewhere, Disney has experimented with different versions of the concept, including Toy Story Playland at Disneyland Paris, which opened in 2010, and Hong Kong Disneyland’s Toy Story Land, which followed in 2011.

However, one of the company’s more intense Toy Story attractions is about to temporarily disappear from the lineup.

Disney Confirms Eight-Day Roller Coaster Shutdown

Shanghai Disneyland has scheduled a temporary closure of Rex’s Racer, the half-pipe roller coaster that opened alongside Disney·Pixar Toy Story Land on April 26, 2018.

According to the park’s official operating calendar, Rex’s Racer will close on November 28, 2026, and remain unavailable through December 5. The attraction is currently expected to resume operations on December 6.

The eight-day shutdown is for refurbishment, meaning Disney has no plans to permanently remove the attraction. Guests visiting during this period will need to leave Rex’s Racer off their itineraries, although the park’s other Toy Story rides are still listed among its attractions.

Rex’s Racer has operated for more than eight years, having debuted as part of Shanghai Disneyland’s first major expansion following the park’s opening in June 2016. Toy Story Land became its seventh themed area and introduced three rides alongside new shopping, dining, and character experiences.

The roller coaster takes its inspiration from RC, the remote-controlled car belonging to Andy in the original Toy Story (1995). Guests board an oversized version of the vehicle while Rex and Trixie, two of the franchise’s dinosaur characters, oversee the action.

Rather than following a conventional circuit, the coaster sends its vehicle racing backward and forward along a steep, U-shaped track. Each successive climb takes riders toward the top of the orange structure before sending them plunging back down.

Visitors hoping to experience the coaster before its refurbishment will therefore need to ride by November 27, assuming no additional schedule changes.

More Changes Underway at Shanghai Disneyland

The temporary closure comes during a particularly busy period for Shanghai Disney Resort, which celebrated its 10th anniversary in June 2026 and has several expansion projects underway.

Among the biggest is a new Spider-Man-themed land, set to become Shanghai Disneyland’s ninth themed area. The development will introduce the park’s first major Marvel attraction, a high-speed roller coaster inspired by the web-slinging superhero.

Construction reached a milestone in June when crews completed the installation of the attraction’s track. In August, Disney revealed that the first ride vehicles had been installed, with testing expected to follow.

The new land will also introduce a Shanghai branch of the Worldwide Engineering Brigade, or W.E.B., a fictional research organization featured in Disney’s Spider-Man attractions. The development will sit beside Zootopia, which opened in December 2023.

Elsewhere, Disney is expanding Soaring Over the Horizon, the flight simulator located in Adventure Isle. The project is intended to increase the attraction’s capacity by approximately 50% and introduce changes to the ride’s finale.

Accommodation is another priority. Disney announced on October 30 that Shanghai Disney Enchanted Star Hotel will open on December 16, 2026, with reservations beginning November 6.

The nine-story hotel will feature 400 rooms, Art Nouveau-inspired architecture, and views overlooking Wishing Star Lake and Shanghai Disneyland. A fourth resort hotel is also in development, alongside an expansion of the Disneytown shopping and entertainment district.
