Disney World Reshapes Toy Story Land After 8 Years, New Feature Already Broken

Disney World has made plenty of changes to its theme parks over the years, but its latest addition to Disney’s Hollywood Studios raises an interesting question: How much can Disney change an area before it loses the original story?

Eight years after opening, one of Hollywood Studios’ most popular themed lands is beginning to look a little different from what Imagineers originally envisioned.

Disney recently introduced a new entertainment feature designed to bring additional music, games, and character interactions to the area. Unfortunately, the addition is already experiencing technical problems.

And while a broken screen might not seem particularly significant, the feature itself represents a much bigger change to Toy Story Land.

Disney World’s Newest Toy Story Land Addition Already Broken

On October 28, guests visiting Toy Story Land encountered an unexpected problem with Lilypad, the frog-shaped smart tablet recently introduced at Alien Swirling Saucers.

According to WDWMAGIC, Lilypad’s display screen had gone completely black, even though the character’s audio continued operating.

The malfunction created an awkward situation for guests watching the entertainment between ride cycles.

Lilypad continued introducing interactive games, including picture puzzles that ask guests to identify drawings appearing on the screen. However, visitors couldn’t participate properly because the screen wasn’t displaying anything.

Fortunately, Alien Swirling Saucers itself remained operational, and guests could continue enjoying the attraction.

Still, the timing makes the malfunction particularly disappointing.

Lilypad debuted on September 25, 2026, meaning the feature encountered problems just 33 days after its introduction.

Disney hasn’t announced what caused the issue or provided a timeline for restoring the display.

Disney’s Latest Addition Changes Toy Story Land’s Original Story

Lilypad joined Alien Swirling Saucers as part of an update connected to Pixar’s Toy Story 5 (2026).

The character serves as a DJ, playing familiar Toy Story music alongside original songs recorded for the attraction.

Between ride cycles, Lilypad also entertains guests with word games, picture puzzles, and videos featuring familiar characters.

While the addition creates more entertainment opportunities, it also introduces something that doesn’t quite belong in the land’s original setting.

When Toy Story Land opened in June 2018, Disney designed the entire area around Andy’s backyard.

Guests were supposed to feel as though they had shrunk to the size of toys, surrounded by oversized objects Andy had left outside.

Slinky Dog Dash appeared to be a homemade roller coaster, while Alien Swirling Saucers incorporated toy-inspired vehicles and familiar characters.

Every detail helped support the illusion.

But Lilypad is a modern smart tablet.

And that’s where the original concept begins falling apart.

Andy wouldn’t have had Lilypad in his backyard during the childhood era represented by the original Toy Story movies.

By introducing technology associated with Toy Story 5 (2026), Disney has moved beyond the original backyard timeline.

Is Toy Story Land Losing Its Identity?

Disney hasn’t announced plans to completely reimagine Toy Story Land, and the area still maintains most of its original appearance.

However, Lilypad’s arrival suggests Disney is willing to prioritize newer characters over the land’s established storytelling.

There are certainly benefits to introducing fresh entertainment, particularly when it gives families something to enjoy between attractions.

But Toy Story Land wasn’t originally designed as a collection of experiences representing every Toy Story movie.

It was supposed to be Andy’s backyard.

That distinction helped make the land feel immersive rather than simply decorative.

Now, eight years after opening, Disney has introduced a character that challenges that original premise.

The technical problems may eventually disappear, but the larger creative question isn’t going away.

If Disney continues incorporating newer Toy Story characters without considering the backyard setting, the land could gradually become something very different from what guests experienced in 2018.
