Universal Orlando has spent years developing attractions that promise experiences unlike anything guests have seen before. But at Epic Universe, some visitors are questioning whether the technology behind those experiences is living up to expectations.
When the theme park opened in May 2025, fans knew its complex ride systems and advanced animatronics would likely encounter occasional technical problems. After all, operating an entirely new collection of attractions isn’t exactly simple.
However, nearly a year and a half later, some of those concerns haven’t disappeared.
Guests continue reporting unexpected closures, malfunctioning effects, and experiences that don’t always deliver everything Universal intended.
Now, a video shared on October 28 has renewed criticism of a popular attraction after several major features reportedly failed during the same ride.
Three Major Effects Reportedly Stop Working
Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment quickly became a major attraction inside Epic Universe’s Dark Universe.
The elaborate dark ride takes visitors into the world of Universal’s classic monsters, using advanced animatronics and detailed environments to create encounters with characters including Frankenstein’s Monster and Dracula.
Unfortunately, a recent social media video reportedly captured several important effects malfunctioning.
In one scene, Frankenstein’s Monster appeared to be struck by a surge of electricity. However, the massive animatronic reportedly remained motionless instead of performing its intended movements.
Another problem involved Dracula.
The vampire normally appears to fly through the air while thousands of bats fill the background. In the reported footage, the scene remained dark, and the animatronic failed to move.
The video also reportedly showed problems with a third figure, a hunchback, inside a bell.
According to the guest’s footage, all three effects malfunctioned during the same experience.
While the attraction apparently continued operating, guests weren’t receiving the complete experience Universal designed.
For a ride that depends heavily on elaborate monster encounters, missing several major animated figures can make a noticeable difference.

Frustrated Visitors Say They’ve Seen This Before
The latest complaints are particularly frustrating because Monsters Unchained has faced similar reports since Epic Universe opened.
Visitors have reported issues with stationary animatronics, missing effects, and preshow sequences that don’t operate correctly.
Following the October 28 video, several guests expressed disappointment with what they described as recurring issues.
“The finale drac will never be fixed,” one commenter wrote.
Another visitor claimed the attraction had experienced similar problems the previous week.
“It was this way last week. The pre-show with Frankenstein and Dr. Victoria was dark, and they just had us walk through it. Really disappointed.”
A third commenter questioned Universal’s decision to continue operating the attraction under those conditions.
“Running an attraction in this state is insane to me,” the guest wrote.
Other visitors have shared similar frustrations about encountering broken effects during otherwise operational rides.
For families spending hundreds of dollars on a Universal Orlando vacation, missing some of the attraction’s biggest moments can understandably feel disappointing.
Universal has not publicly confirmed a permanent solution to the specific problems documented in the video.

Other Epic Universe Rides Have Faced Complaints
Unfortunately, Monsters Unchained isn’t the only attraction at Epic Universe that has experienced technical difficulties.
Several major rides have faced complaints about unexpected downtime and operational interruptions.
Inside SUPER NINTENDO WORLD, Donkey Kong Mine-Cart Madness uses an unusual coaster system that creates the illusion of jumping across broken sections of track.
Although the technology offers a different experience from traditional roller coasters, guests posting on Inside Universal Forums have reported recurring delays and technical interruptions.
Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry has also generated complaints.
Located in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic, the attraction uses an advanced ride system that simulates movement through magical elevators.
However, visitors have reported unexpected interruptions and temporary closures that can leave guests waiting longer than anticipated.
Meanwhile, Hiccup’s Wing Gliders, the family roller coaster in How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk, has also experienced temporary delays and operational halts.
These reports don’t necessarily mean the attractions experience problems every day, but they explain why reliability remains a concern among some visitors.

Universal Faces Continued Pressure to Improve
Epic Universe has introduced an impressive collection of attractions, and its ambitious technology remains a major part of the park’s appeal.
However, guests also expect those attractions to work properly.
For Monsters Unchained, the frustration goes beyond whether the ride remains open. Visitors want to experience the animated figures, elaborate scenes, and special effects that make the attraction memorable.
With Epic Universe well beyond its opening year, some fans are understandably expecting more consistent operations.
Universal has created some remarkable experiences, but maintaining them will remain an important part of keeping guests satisfied.
